Grandma's
Last Goodbye
by gerryvic
It is a Filipino belief that when a person dies, they have seven days in which their spirit can wander the earth to say goodbye to their loved ones. Two days after my grandmother's death, my sister called me at 6 a.m. in a panic because she thought that my grandmother's ghost had just visited her. I sleepily drove over to her apartment. When I got there, she told me she had been sleeping and was awakened by her husband getting out of bed to ready himself for work. He showered, dressed and proceeded out the door after saying goodbye to my sister. She rolled back over to go back to sleep. My sister sleeps with a towel over her eyes so that the she is in perpetual darkness. About 20 minutes after her husband left, she felt his side of the bed depress and become weighted, as if he was getting back into bed with her. She said, without removing the towel, "Did you forget something? What are you doing back?" No answer. She lifted the towel off her eyes and nobody was there.
The apartment was empty even though she was positive that someone had just climbed into bed with her! It was then she called me. I didn't really believe her story, thought she must have just got jittery, but I agreed to keep her company until she went to work herself. I slept on the couch while she readied herself for work. Finally, she too left for work and I had peace and quiet to finish my sleep. I was sleeping quite soundly when 30 minutes later, a very loud humming started. I thought it was coming from outside, a garbage truck perhaps. It continued on long enough to annoy me, until I finally opened my eyes. The sound was coming from the TV set, which had turned on by itself! It was so early in the morning that there was only the "no broadcast" symbol and hum signal. That freaked me, so I got up, got in my car and drove home too scared now to sleep.
