Saved
from a Fire
by Dee C.
I was 21 years of age at the time, and like everyone of that age in Australia, it was time to head overseas. The boat took an extra 10 days to get from Australia to Cape Town because it kept breaking down. On arrival at Cape Town, the "young ones' headed off to a night club. I was one of the "young ones." Please note we were all white. A tall black man followed us through the town and kept pointing to me. "You, little one in yellow, go back to the ship." This went on for about an hour until I said, You win."
I told my shipmates that I was heading back. They rejected my decision, but I decided to return to the ship. One of the men offered to walk back with me, I told him I felt safe going alone, but he insisted. So we left the group and returned to the ship. We walked back together and the black man followed. On embarking the ship, I turned and said to the black man, "At this moment I am angry with you, but feel that in time I will say thank you." He smiled, nodded and waved goodbye.
I never saw him again, but nor did I see most of the group who went to the night club. They were killed in a deliberately lit fire. Two nights later my cabin mate entered our cabin, it was late afternoon and I was resting. Some days later she told me that when she came into the room I was floating at least two feet off the bed. Although spooked, she felt safe with me. In fact most people on the ship felt safe with me and then once the story spread most wanted to be near me.
