Bearing
Grandpa's Mark
by Suzanne
When I was 9 years old, my mother told me that she was pregnant. This was to be the fourth child in our family, and last. I loved my siblings and was very happy to hear the news! I asked her when the baby would be here, and she said around the middle of July. I told her then "No, it will be born on my birthday (August 1st)." She just laughed at me and said that was too much of a coincidence.
But the joy I felt was tempered by the fear I felt of losing my ailing grandfather. He was 100, and I knew he wouldn't be around much longer. Toward the end, he recognized very few of us which was hard for me. I didn't want to lose my grandpa, but for him to think you were some stranger was just too much to bear. A couple of months went by, and he passed away. My mother was about five months pregnant at the time. I took the loss very hard, as my grandpa had been my best friend. He had taught me all the best lessons in life, and I missed him terribly.
One evening, I dreamed of my grandpa. He was running my mother's tummy and laughing, proud that he was going to have another grandchild. He looked at me and said, "This baby is a boy, and he will be your twin. He will bear my mark." I remembered the dream very vividly when I awoke, and I told my mother. Of course, she dismissed it, as I knew she would.
Several months more passed, and I woke up on the morning of my birthday... happy as all young children are on their birthday. I walked into the kitchen to find it empty. My aunt was in the living room. When I asked where Mom was, she told me that she was at the hospital having my baby brother or sister. I set about making him (I knew it was a him because that's what grandpa had said) a gift, and forgot about it being my birthday. This was the best present ever!
So several days later, my mom came home with my new little brother... and then I learned what my my grandfather had meant about "bearing his mark." The baby had a head full of golden hair, except for one circular patch at the very front of his head where it was dark. From his birth until the day he died, my grandfather had that very same patch of dark hair.
