Unexplained Noise
by Brenda S.

My husband, myself and our three children were living with his folks while looking for a house to rent near by. One day we left the kids with his mom and went to look at houses having no luck - every house was too small or the rent was too high. When we came home later that evening, mom was in the kitchen making dinner. Her face looked like thunder - she was obviously upset. We ask her what was wrong and she told us that the older girls had taken a bath and gotten the whole bathroom soaked; they had overfilled the tub and it spilled on to the floor. Water was everywhere in the bathroom, the hall and the kitchen below. Looking up, we could see a brown water stain on the kitchen ceiling.

Later that night, I could not sleep and turned on the bedside lamp and opened up the book I was reading. I had been reading for about 15 minutes or so when I heard the first of a series of loud bangings coming from downstairs. Still angry at the kids from earlier, I immediately thought that only kids could be so rude as to make such noise in the middle of the night! I got up, slipped on my robe and went to do battle with my children. Instead, I was met in the hall by my sleepy youngest daughter coming out of the bathroom. When I accused her of being downstairs and making a racket, she denied it and said that all the kids were in bed and asleep. Still on a rampage, I opened the bedroom door and did a head count. It was true: the other two were asleep. I apologized to my now teary-eyed daughter and told her to get back into bed. I had almost forgotten why I'd got out of bed. When that same banging started coming from downstairs again. After tucking my daughter back into bed I decided to go have a look.

I will never understand what made me go down those stairs with out waking up my husband or anyone else first. But sown I went as quietly as I could. I wanted to catch whoever was making all that noise in the act. The staircase is laid out in a way that from near the bottom of the last steps one can see almost the whole kitchen. I stopped at that exact spot all of the noise that had persisted as I was making my way down the stairs came to a sudden end as my foot touch the last steep. The light over the kitchen sink was on and did a good job of lighting up the kitchen so that only the far corners were in the shadow. I could see that no one was in the kitchen, "Well I told myself you've come this far may as well check out the whole thing." I started to step off of the last step when I felt a paralyzing cold. It seemed to chill the blood in my veins. The hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood upright. I wanted to turn around and run up the stairs, but I could not move. For what seemed like minutes, but could have only been seconds. I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare. When I finally was able to control my arms and legs again, I ran back upstairs and jumped in bed pulling the cover over my head and did not sleep the rest of the night.

Later that week, we moved into a house that was way too small for all of us. But I wanted out of my in-laws home. My husband's brother and his wife were helping us to move our things in. When Joanne and I were alone in my new kitchen unpacking some things I told her about what had happened that night. She laughed and told me that she too had met Mrs. X the previous owned of my in-laws house. Seems everyone in the family has at least one story about meeting Mrs. she said that may be Mrs. X was welcoming me to the family. Somehow I don't' think so I think she was angry that the kid's had ruined her beautiful home.
