Saved By an Angel
by Richard H.

When I was in grade school, the 4th or 5th grade, I preferred to walk home on nice days rather than ride the bus. It was a three-mile walk and I enjoyed the fresh air and being outdoors. I lived in the small college town of Greenville NC. I attended Agnes Fullilove Elementary School.

As I walked home that day, I took my normal route that lead me past the tobacco warehouses, and then to the barber shop were I use to get my GI-style haircuts. Across from the barber shop was the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. They had a very large plate glass window where you could see the bottles being filled and capped. It was always interesting to see that operation, so I would always cross the street at that point. As usual, there were cars parked in the street against the curb, that is were the barber shop customers parked. As I walked down the sidewalk I was not aware that there was anyone else around. That is how it usually was; this was not a downtown location so I didn't think anything of it. When I got to the barbershop I stepped off the sidewalk and in between two parked cars.

The street was always busy, but I looked back and forth both ways waiting for a clear space to run across the street. When I decided to make my dash and went into motion, I suddenly realized that I wasn't going anywhere and at that same instant a car went zooming past. I turned around and a man was holding my backpack. I said, "Gee, thanks mister." I looked again and scurried across the street. When I got to the other side, I looked back and the man was gone. I continued my journey to the Pepsi window and watched the bottles being filled and found myself wandering where he came from, how lucky I was that he was there at that time and were he went after I got across the street. I didn't think about it much after that. As a kid I attributed it to just being lucky and him being there at the right time and place.

Now when I look back at it, I am certain that it was not luck. Whether or not he was my guardian angel I may never know. I do believe with all my heart that he was there to save me from certain death and because of that I feel that I am here for a reason. I don't know what that reason is and may never know, but I do believe that I have a purpose in life.
