Chupacabra... or Something Like It
by Jonathan S.

On the night of Friday Oct. 17, 2003, at about 10 p.m., my best friend Brian and I went to a local park, Cliff Cave, in St. Louis, Missouri. Of course, I'm afraid to report it because it would be considered trespassing to be in the park after sundown. Anyway, occasionally we get bored and walk from his house to this open field above the park (the park involves a cliff over a railroad and a cave right next to the Mississippi River, hence "Cliff Cave"), which is level with the cliff. This field has forest surrounding it and a few hermit-owned "no trespassing" houses behind it.

Last night at about 9:40, we left my friend's house and walked to the park. When we passed through the trees guarding the field, I noticed that the grass had a sort of shroud or clear like fog about two feet above it. As I walked to the center of the field, I noticed something moving in front of the trees on the other end of the field about 500 feet away. As I crept closer, I could see this sort of white figure, about 5-6 foot tall, moving slowly. It wasn't exactly walking and it didn't have any real definition about it. It kinda looked like an apparition the closer we got. I was the first one to see it and as I realized it wasn't my imagination, I quickened my pace. My friend noticed it at the last second and began to follow. I could really start to make it out. On completion of a step, there was a loud screech, like the creature forced the air out of its lungs and made a EEE-Uuuungh sound. Then I saw this half erect, two-foot-tall, gray creature fling up about 10-15 feet in the air right in front of the white figure. It reminded me of a monkey in shape and movement. It made its noise again. All in two or three seconds.

I yelled in shock, we both reversed and booked it. I tripped several times into these divots in the ground. I felt like I was gonna be the one that was picked off. The second time I tripped I watched my friend pull ahead and in fear I yelled, "Brian! Help!" I know that it could move really fast, even at that distance, it would have me soon enough. Brian turned as I recovered, I said, "Run!" and we finally got through the trees and to the subdivision. After we caught our breath, we stumbled back to the entrance of the field. As we watched the now very white shroud above the grass move around, I swear I watched a serpent like formation of fog crawling across the field in front of us. I walked a few feet and stood in awe of this phenomenon, only to hear a very agitated "EEe-Uuungh" coming from the center of the field.

We quickly went to the subdivision side of the trees and stopped. Now listening hard, we stared at the break in the trees. Suddenly, Brian says, "RUN! I hear it coming!" We must have run half a block, when we stopped. Very slowly we built the nerve to shyly creep towards the trees. Curiosity always wins with us. A few more sort of triumphant howls from the creature and then nothing for a half hour as we stare in to the void between the trees. We must have looked insane to the drivers by. Two 19 year olds in black leather jackets staring into this dark separation of trees. Once more my best friend decides to enter this now chilling field. I as brave as possible for the moment follow six feet behind, not very urgently. Nothing else really happened before we decided to head to his house. It only got colder and colder.
