Sparks
by Carolyn E.
About 18 years ago, I was undergoing a root canal at a dentist about an hour away up the Cajon Pass in California. My husband worked in the same town, Apple Valley, as our dentist and I worked in the valley at a major medical center. I got off work and picked up our eight-year-old son, and so we went to my appointment. My husband was waiting for us at the dental office and took care of our son while the procedure was done. I was awake and only had an injection for anesthesia. No other drugs. When I was done, our son opted to ride with Mommy on the way home, so off we went, following my husband in his Scout 4x4.
The sun was setting and people were turning on their headlights. It was a lovely sunset, lots of color and the beautiful mountains on either side of the pass ahead. We had gotten to a point in the road where a "landmark" sign was. A Hula Dancer sign, inviting all who drove passed to stop and dine and get married while you were at it. A local tourist trap. My son pointed at daddies 4x4 and said "Look!" There behind my husbands car was a black wire looking thing dangling out the back of the tail gate. It whipped around and struck the road making sparks. Just then the thing let loose and sparked and bounced until we ran over it. We both heard a pop as we passed over it. I didn't feel danger, just kind of bewildered and we both laughed. Then my son said, "Mommy, who is sitting next to daddy?" Sure enough, there was the back of my husbands head and someone was sitting next to him in the other bucket seat! I was trying to drive and look at the same time, and at one point I thought nothing was there, and the next moment I was sure someone was there. We started down the downgrade of the pass, and I had to pay more attention to the road, soon we were home.
I asked my husband what was hanging out of the back of his truck. He said there was nothing. He just thought about it a moment and then told me. "You know, just as I drove by the Hula Dancer Sign, I started smelling a fresh and warm perfume. I was worried about you and our son following along at dusk, and then this warm safe feeling came over me and this sweet fresh scent." I told him that we saw sparks and then we thought we saw someone sitting with him in the car. He hates the paranormal, but he had trouble explaining that one away. To this day we don't know what happened.
