The Black Beast
by Tim

In the late summer of 1997, I was working in a fabrication shop that made modified parts for snowmobiles in a mid-Michigan small town. I worked second shift from three o'clock in the afternoon until three in the morning. The shop was located in an area that was virtually surrounded by endless miles of farm land. The entire day was very warm and humid on this particular day that I went to work. At the time, I had a small convertible that I used for transportation. I had the top down on the car all day and kept it that way when I pulled into the shop. The night air was still warm when my shift ended, so I decided to drive home with the top down.

As I came up to the long stretch of road that I had to turn on to get home, I saw SOMETHING crawl on all fours out of the culvert on the corner of the road. This thing was BIG! It was about 2/3 the size of my car with black matted fur that almost looked like a shadow as it moved toward the house that was there on the corner. It never even dawned on me that I had my car completely stopped as I watched this thing, when I thought to myself "Oh my god! It's a bear!"

There was really no light shining on it to be certain for sure, but that seemed to make the most sense - that is, until it turned its head and looked at me. When I saw two almond-shaped, blood red eyes that seemed to illuminate out of this blackened void as they peered back at me, I knew that this was no bear. Bears don't live in rural farming communities, nor do they get that damned big either. It turned away and slowly moved toward the back of the house where it vanished. I tried in vain to convince myself on my way home that it was a bear that I saw, but knew well enough that no animals eyes illuminate in that way without a light source shining right at them. To this day, I still don't know what it was.
