This is certainly the strangest thing that has happened to me in all of my 32 years. It is now four hours after the fact and I still sit breathless at the computer trying to find something... anything online about what I saw today.
Traveling just west of Neodesha, Kansas on Hwy. 400 (heading west). I was fighting with the heavy rain, a rental car I wasn't use to, and a highway I have never driven. Just trying to get home in one piece, I was meticulously following the speed limit and paying close attention to the oncoming traffic both ahead and behind me when I entered into a "passing lane" area on this two-lane highway. I moved to the outside right-hand lane (the slow lane) so that others could pass me (as they had been doing for the last 30 minutes anyway). But when I glanced in my rearview mirror, I noted there wasn't anyone remotely near my car to pass. Relaxing a little now that I wasn't stuck going head to head with the oncoming semi-trucks, I glanced in my rearview again.
This time I saw a car that wasn't back there a moment ago. It was gaining on me and I figured it was just going to go around me in the left hand passing lane. Glancing back again a moment later, I saw the car made incredible progress in catching up with me. At its increased speed, it was gaining on me very very quickly and yet it was NOT in the passing lane... it was riding directly behind me in the "slow" lane. I was nearly at the end of the two-mile passing area and was starting to get nervous. It was POURING outside, I was doing 65 mph, and this ridiculous car was speeding up behind me - it couldn't have been more than a few feet behind me now and it looked like it was still accelerating.
I could see another headlight directly behind it, but a little higher (a small truck, maybe?) and it was tailing very close to the car that was on my tail-end! At this moment I realized if it wasn't raining so hard I would be able to see directly inside this car behind me. Unfortunately, all I could see was the windshield and the wipers going on full speed - I couldn't even see the headlights - the car was so close to me!
I began to panic. I just KNEW this car was going to slam into me and we were going to be spread across the highway. I veered to the left quickly and moved into the passing lane, maybe 20 feet or so before the two lanes merged together. I had to look forward because of the oncoming traffic now so close to my car (and remember its raining like crazy). A few semi-trucks passed me and I glanced back at the crazy car that was following so close and WHAM!!! It's GONE. Just POOF. Gone.
I know for a fact it couldn't have turned off - I don't remember a turnoff, but even more so... it was going TOO FAST to have slowed down w/out crashing... and especially with the truck behind it so close. There would have been a visible wreck. A very noisy crash. There was nothing behind me but wet pavement. I started to slow down. I was in awe. I was in shock. And I was still shaking from what I thought was about to be my death due to some speeding idiot. Within seconds... I drove out of the rain.
The torrential downpour was behind me, and so was the little bit of Hwy W 400 that has left me quite shaken and seriously questioning.
