Flying Things
by Chris

It was a summer night in 1981 in the city of Woodland, California and I was 11 years old at the time. My friend Kerry and I were at a dance to raise money for our Pop Warner football team. We spent a few hours there, dancing and mingling, but no sooner had the time come to begin the clean-up (the league had rented a hall for the event) did we decide to sneak outside. We ran down the front steps of the building and out onto the sidewalk and waited for the dust to settle. This building is situated in a scarcely used street. In fact, the street was more of a big alley than anything else though it is paved.

A few minutes into our conversation, my friend says to look out into the distance behind me. I turned around and looked up to see a pair of what at first appeared to be cranes or similar bird flying toward us. They were side by side and I wondered why my buddy would even acknowledge them in the first place since we lived in an area with a good amount of wildlife and saw animals all the time. But as they approached, I found out why.

Each animal was about the size of a person, complete with arms and legs, but also having long necks and tails. Their heads were small, and as they flew right over us, we could see them actually look down at us several times. This was very disturbing because they had faces, not the elongated snout of a bird. We couldn't make out specific features, but they absolutely had flat-ish faces. Their tails, as I said, were long and had a ball or something round at the end. The wings were membranous and the arms seemed to fit through the wings and the hands stuck out at the ends. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say a bat. The wing beats were quick and almost stiff. Now, this sighting took place late at night so I can understand someone thinking that our vision was impaired and devoid of true accuracy, but it was a clear night with no surrounding foliage to disturb the view. And on top of that, they were only slightly higher than some of the oak tree tops, so our size estimates were not contorted. We quickly ran back inside and only later did we mention this to our parents but it has stuck with us. I will never forget what I saw that night.
