Passing Army of Ghosts
by Winkelstein

This story happened to the father of my teacher. He's an engineer and doesn't believe in the supernatural. In 1943 he was a nine-year-old boy and lived with his mother and little sister in a remote village in Saxony, Germany. The next neighbors lived almost a mile away.

It was a very quiet, cloudless, cold night with an almost full moon. The mother and children were sitting at the fireside reading, when suddenly somebody knocked at the front door. The mother was scared and didn't open. They sat there listening to any noise from outside but couldn't hear a thing from whoever was there. After a few seconds there was another knock. The mother didn't dare to open the door and nobody spoke. Then it knocked for the third time. The mother got up and walked over to the door. She hesitated and still couldn't bring herself to open the door.

Then they all heard it: there must have been hundreds of men walking past the house on the country road outside. They could hear them dragging their feet slowly, some were breathing with audible difficulties, some were sighing or moaning in a stifled kind of way. They looked at each other in terror: was there an army outside?

After a while the sounds subsided and everything was quiet again. The mother unlocked the front door and they had a look outside. There was nobody. They could see for miles and there was absolutely nobody. There were no footsteps in the snow. They all got back into the house and went to bed feeling sad and confused.

Some weeks later a letter arrived: their father had died that same night in Stalingrad. This is a true story and my teacher's father hates to talk about it. In fact, he still leaves the room when the issue is brought up at family gatherings.
