The Orange Rock
by Christine

I think what happened to me and my kids qualifies as a paranormal story. In 1999, my two early teenage kids and I lived outside of Sarasota, Florida on about two uncultivated acres. My husband was dead in a trucking accident, so it was just the kids and me. Both of my kids played on the property, which we rented from a developer who had informed us that our lease was short term because he planned to build homes on the lot. This figures somewhat into my story too.

One day my son Ryan said that he and his sister had discovered a bright orange rock jutting up from the soil in a brushy place where they played. It was so unusual looking and so bright that they decided to dig it up. The rock turned out to be entirely orange and about as big as a large watermelon. They put it into a wheelbarrow and brought it to the house. They managed to get it onto the screened porch, and the minute it was there all the power in the house shut off. No other house experienced this in the area, so it was not a general blackout. Also, the phone went dead almost immediately.

As it got darker, we saw that the orange rock glowed, but it was a dim glow. I was more worried about the power than anything else, and for some reason I knew to blame the rock on the porch and asked the kids to put it in the yard away from the house. They did, and immediately the power and phone came back. They covered it with a tarp which hid it.

The next day was Saturday, and, as I was doing dishes, a large white van pulled up and two rather muscular young women got out, walked straight to the tarp, pulled it off the rock, picked up the rock, threw it in the van, and drove away without saying a word. The rock had been completely hidden, and there was no way that they could have seen it in the yard from the driveway. The same day, someone in the office of the development company called and said that our lease on the house and property was cancelled effective in two weeks. We were supposed to have had the property for another two years. We were warned that "evidence of improper usage" had been gathered on us and not to fight the eviction. Our rent was paid up, but the person on the phone said we would receive a refund check for the current month, and they sent it. No further explanation was given.

I blame the orange rock. These things happened so fast after it was found, it could not have been a coincidence.
