Jersey Devil in Canada?

This incident happened to my boyfriend and his sister just a few days ago, on October 7th, 2007. He lives in Burnaby, B.C. Now the area is residential and very developed; however, there is a wooded area nearby.
Around 4 p.m. that day, his sister was in the bathroom fixing her hair when she heard footsteps on the roof. She asked my boyfriend if their dad was working up there and he said no. Then she looked up to the skylight window on the ceiling and asked, "Then what the heck is that?" My boyfriend walked in, and what he saw next freaked the daylights out of him. They both saw what can only be described as a black furry hoof of an animal scratching at the window. Only the leg was visible.
Moments later, their mother showed up in the bathroom, but the hoof had disappeared and in its place was a black crow. It was literally seconds ago that my boyfriend and his sister had seen that hoof. Their mother had also heard the footsteps on the roof, but assumed that it was one of her children making noises around the house. They did some investigation around the outside of the house but saw nothing.
We are absolutely puzzled as to how that creature got up onto their roof and in broad daylight! I remember reading stories about the Jersey Devil. Could whatever was on his roof be something of that sort?
