The Traveler
by Lorraine
This event occurred in the fall of 1995 in Southwestern Virginia. I was a young professional woman at that time and shared a two-bedroom apartment with another woman who was a colleague. Sharing a bathroom, it was convenient that she happened to be a "night owl" who enjoyed sleeping late, while I was up and gone early in the morning before she awoke.
On this night I had gone to bed around 10:00 p.m. as usual, and my roommate was watching TV in the living room. Being on the third floor, I often left my window open at night. Opening the curtains to get the fresh night air meant that the street lights would illuminate the room quite a bit.
I had been asleep about two hours when I woke lying on my back. As I opened my eyes, I was looking directly toward the foot of the bed, and I was not alone. I clearly saw the well-defined but opaque shadow form of a woman. She appeared to wear a loose, floor-length garment and either her hair was long, reaching to her shoulders or she wore a hood... with no discernible details, I could not tell which. She stood with her arms by her side facing me. In fact, I knew that as I was staring straight at her... she was staring straight at me.
In retrospect, my reaction was rather comical. I was thinking to myself, "There is a woman standing there... Am I dreaming?... No... I'm awake... I'm awake and I'm lying here looking at her... She's looking at me... Yep, she's still there... She hasn't moved... This is real...." And at that point I just screamed - a long blood-curdling scream. My roommate ran in from the living room, throwing the door open and flipping the light switch on. (She told me later that I had frightened her to death as she thought someone had been hiding in my room and was now surely killing me!)
She sat on the edge of the bed and I told her exactly what had happened. To my surprise, she didn't think me delusional at all, but suggested that this may have been a "traveler" (an entity from another realm or reality that for some reason is passing through our own)! In fact, she was admittedly envious that the visitor appeared to me rather than her. She told me that I had nothing to fear and that, should this happen again, it would be best to remain calm and simply say, "Who are you?" or "Tell me your name." I've kept that advice in mind for years now... unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to use it!
