Gladys's Ghost
by Vicky H.

A house that I lived in for about a year was haunted by Gladys, the lady that had passed away just before I moved in. She had lived in the house for almost 40 years and had raised two children in the house as a single parent. This information was passed to me by the realtor who helped us buy the house. When we first moved in (my two teenage children and I), the first night I felt a pressure at the foot of my bed and an uncomfortable presence. It was a feeling like I was not welcome there. I attributed this to my own reaction to a new home, new situation and the stress of moving. I loved the house; it had been well taken care of and many of the previous owner's possessions had been left in the house. They had an estate sale and most of her possessions had been sold. I started to realize that Gladys didn't like me in "her home" at first. I felt she was angry at me and didn't want me there. I think it was because she was confused. My daughter and I both would feel air movement close to our faces, or a tap on the shoulder to turn around and no one would be there. Almost daily the television would turn itself on or off or the channel would change by itself. My daughter would hear loud pounding noises that went on for long periods of time in the late night hours. My alarm clock would advance time often. I would reset it, then it would happen again, once by more than an hour. I went into the kitchen after getting ready for work one morning to find I was more than an hour early. (I have used the same alarm clock since we moved from that house and it has worked perfectly. Not once since moving has it advanced itself.) I read in bed each night before falling asleep. Each night I would turn off the lamp, and within minutes, just as I was falling asleep, my lamp shade would make loud crackling sounds, sometimes for over 10 minutes. I thought it might be the heat from the light while it was cooling, so I tried an experiment and used the ceiling light rather than the lamp and it still happened the same way - the lamp shade would still make the crackling noise, sometimes very loudly for longer periods of time, and it happened each night. One very early morning about 4 a.m., I was awakened by the blankets being lifted off of me at least three to four feet. This frightened me and also made me angry. I yelled, "I know you're here for whatever reason, but I won't tolerate being touched! Don't do that!" And the covers fell back onto me and that never did happen again. I know it was Gladys, and I felt that maybe she didn't know she was dead and that I was in her space. At first she was angry with me, but then decided that I was okay. At this point she was then content just to remind me she was there. I took very good care of "her home," so she wasn't angry at me any longer.
