Ghost Cat
by Christine S.
A couple of years ago, I moved into an apartment in a large complex. After inquiring about a stray cat, I was informed by another resident that a tenant who had moved away had abandoned the cat. I felt bad for the cat, so I started feeding her. My neighbor also felt bad, so she provided water and a blanket in the winter. This cat, an orange calico, "lived" on our front porch. She was very distrustful of people and would never let me touch her. She wouldnt even eat her food until I had left her alone with it. After about nine months, she would come as close as my feet and sort of sniff them. But if I moved a muscle, she would run.
This went on for almost a year and I did not plan to renew my lease. My neighbor had moved away a few months earlier. I was beginning to worry about who would care for her when I left in a couple of months. She would never let me close enough to take her with me. I already had two cats, but they had come to know her from our every morning ritual. She would come to the porch and ask for food. We always knew it was her because she had a very distinct meow. She would stretch it out with little breaks, like "Meow ow ow ow ow ow." My cats would look at me and immediately run to the window. I would get a scoop of food and go out and fill her bowl.
One morning she didnt come. It surprised me as she had not missed a day since I started feeding her. Next day, no cat. This went on for about a week and a half. I had asked everyone I ran into outside if they had seen her and no one had. I was so worried. Then one morning as I was getting ready for work, we heard her: "Meow ow ow ow ow ow, Meow ow ow ow ow ow." My cats looked at me and ran to the window. I grabbed a scoop of food and went out. No cat. I couldnt believe it. She was nowhere.
A couple of days later, I ran into another neighbor who I hadn't seen in the past two weeks. I immediately asked her if she had seen the cat. She said, "Oh, you dont know? I've been trying to avoid you because I didn't want to tell you." When I asked her what she was talking about, she answered, "The cat was killed by a car about two weeks ago and I was afraid you would see her at the side of the road in front of the complex."
The cat was killed almost two weeks before she came that one last time. If I had been the only one to hear her, I would wonder if my mind was playing tricks on me, but my two cats also heard her!
