The Haunted Mask
by Kirsten H.

This happened in the year 2001; I don't recall the month. My two best girlfriends and I were having a sleepover at her house. The bedroom we decided to sleep in was sort of a semi-circle, quarter moon shape. It had a single bed and a double bed, across the room from each other. I, unfortunately (yet in some ways fortunately, as I was not quite as much harassed as the other two), was drafted to the single due to a horrible habit of snoring.

Anyway, late at night we decided to go to bed. I crept into my single bed while the others in the double. I was hesitant about sleeping in the single bed by myself. There was an ugly, and no doubt very scary mask nailed to the wall beside my bed. I asked my friend what it was and she replied that it was an old Indian mask that was thought to scare evil spirits away. With that, I crawled into my bed and dozed off into an restless sleep. I was awoken not even 10 minutes later by a loud crash and scratching noise coming from the direction of my friend's bed. Lazily I sat up and asked my friends what it was. Both said they did not know, but were aware that it had come from the wall near the head of their bed. As soon as that was said, a cool draft seemed to engulf the room. With hair standing up and goosebumps forming. I pulled the covers right around me.

That's when it all started to happen. The lamp that was beside the other bed fell with the crash, one of my friends screamed as the other searched frantically for the lamp. Unfortunately, it had fallen and somehow rolled all the way under the bed. Even with no lights on and a cold presence in the room, we all tried once more to fall asleep. Things started to calm down until the voice of one of my friends broke the silence. "Tara, why are you scratching my back?" my friend Kelly asked. Kelly was answered by the whimpering Tara, "I'm not. I thought you were scratching my back." That's when all hell seemed to break loose. All of a sudden, my bed started to vibrate very violently. With tears streaming down my cheeks I could only manage a couple words. "Help me, my bed's shaking, my bed's shaking," I cried repeatedly. Screams erupted in the direction of their bed as theirs started to shake as well. With both beds bouncing, and three girls screaming in complete darkness, it was no doubt the scariest moment of my life.

About three minutes later (but what seemed like forever) my friends mom barged into the room and flipped on the light. Immediately all the chaos stopped. Leaving Tara's mom to find nothing but three hysterical girls crying, a broken lamp, and the wallpaper peeling from the walls (we never found out where that came from). We never slept in that room again.
