Great Grandmother
is Watching
by Susan R.
My name is Heather and I'm 16. My stories aren't as exciting as a story about a strange creature or a weird haunting but I still think it's pretty cool considering the rest of my life is boring.
I never really got to know my great grandmother considering I was six when she died and I never got to visit her often. Nevertheless, I still cared about her and cried at her funeral even though I never really understood what was going on. All I knew was that I would never see her again. I think I was pretty wrong about that part.
When I turned seven, I went on a picnic with my mother and her friend. Her friend had children as well and we goofed around and had fun. I hadn't learned how to swim yet and we were right next to a bay. I decided to go off on my own and walk in the shallow water but I ended up going too far and before I knew what was happening, I was under the water. Of course, I started to panic and I started to struggle to get back to the shore. I started to see a bright light over the surface of the water and I remember the sun being off to my side somewhere. All I could think of was my great grandmother. I'm not sure what happened but I suddenly found myself on shore again and my mother rushing up to me to see if I was alright. I must have not been in the water too long considering my mother just then noticed I wasn't at her side but it seemed like an hour to me. I'll never quite understand what happened that day. It might have been a wave pushing me back to shore but I can't explain that strange light because I'm positive it wasn't the sun.
My last story has to do with what my great grandmother told the whole family for the longest time. She swore that if there was such a thing as reincarnation, she would come back as a cardinal. So now that every time a family member sees a cardinal, we think of her. Well, since I'm 16, I starting going for my learner's permit and my older cousin decided to help me get the feel of driving. We live out in the country so we could use the back roads and I wouldn't have to worry about getting pulled over by the cops. I found out I had a "need for speed" attitude so I flew down the curvy roads in the middle of the woods doing almost 40 (which is pretty dangerous on these kinds of roads). While I was heading for a curve, a cardinal darted out in front of me and I immediately slammed on the breaks in the fear of that I might kill great grandma. Suddenly, a small child on his bike appeared on my side of the road. Me and my cousin were pretty freaked out. So I thanked great grandma and pushed myself to drive slower.
