The Ghost That Watched Me
by Ray J.

I used to work two jobs, preparing for college, and often would just stay downstairs and fall asleep on the couch after work. In fact, it got to be a habit and I just never slept in my bed after awhile.

One night after a light day of work I came home, showered, and got something to eat. I was going to watch a movie, but due to a heavy rainstorm our cable was out. I contented myself with reading a book, and when we lost power, I just decided to go to sleep.

The kitchen clock ran on batteries, and so I know that I laid down to sleep around midnight. Sometime during the night, I began to dream. I was having a nightmare that I was in my den, where I was sleeping, and there were no windows and no door to the kitchen. I tried to find my way out, but just kept going around the room in circles. In the real world, the storm must have really been raging, as I knew in my dream that there was a terrible storm outside, and occasionally I saw flashes of lightning in the room despite there being no windows. As I sought a way out I saw a cross hanging on the wall.

At the time I was not a particularly religious person, and so seeing a large cross on my wall struck me as odd. It was completely out of place. As I looked at it, the cross suddenly slipped, as if a nail that was holding it broke, and it fell so that it was upside down. Then the cross began to bleed, small trickles at first, and then in nice steady streams.

At that moment there was a tremendous blast of thunder, lightning struck about a block from my home, and the noise woke me from my sleep.

The moment I opened my eyes, I saw her. She was very pretty, but looked stern. Her features were almost elfin, to the point that I swear her ears pointed. Her hair was in a bun, one of those tight pulls, so that not a single hair could slip out of place. She was wearing an old (1900s) style of dress, which reminded me of a school marm. Her dress was a drab brown, and completely hid her figure.

She was standing right by my head, looking down at me, staring a hard stare. I looked directly into her eyes and said, "I am awake, I'm not dreaming this."

Her expression only changed slightly, her lip twisted into a slight smirk, which I took her to say, "You wish you were dreaming."

I don't know how long I stared at her, but as soon as I blinked she was gone. I have never seen her again, and my brother now lives in that house with his children. Dave has never said he has seen anything, but his oldest son, Chase, has told my mother that there are people in the closet talking to him, but he refuses to tell us what they say.

Needless to say, after she vanished I leapt from the couch and vacated the room. I looked at the kitchen clock, which read just before 4 am. I got a drink, and told myself that I didn't dream the event, that I was awake. After that I never did sleep on the den. I took to my room and stayed there until I moved out.
