Grandma Still Rocks
by Shortbread

When my sister and I were younger, we always went to our grandparents' house when our parents were out. One day, our grandmother had gotten sick and died. She couldn't be taken to the hospital because my grandfather wouldn't allow it. So she was cared for at home by my grandfather and a nurse. Unfortunately, she died, but her spirit still lives....

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was about 12 years old (I'm 15 now) and my little sister and I had to stay at our grandparents' house. We had played and had fun all day. It wasn't until we went to bed that I saw her. At first I thought it was the wind rocking her chair, so I got up and closed the open window. Then I went back to bed and lay down to sleep.

As I was drifting off, I heard it again and sat up. There was no one in the chair and the window was closed. The rocking continued as I stared. Then she appeared. My grandmother was sitting in the rocking chair rocking in it like she always used to do! She was in her usual position, frequently looking up from her knitting to see if my sister and I were okay.

It was as if she were alive again, but I knew she wasn't because I could see right through her. I wasn't scared or anything, but it was.... shocking I guess.

My grandfather even says that he's seen her in the room that my sister and I sleep in. Sometimes he sees her in the rocking chair, knitting or looking out the window on rainy days. And sometimes he sees her in their bedroom where she died. Once, he saw her lying in bed beside him like nothing had happened. But most of the time, she sits on the foot of the bed, knitting.

Now that I'm older, her ghost doesn't bother me as much anymore. The most frequent visit (which was Saturday, September 11, 2004) was the weirdest because she loved to go to church and got dressed early in the morning. When I had woken up and went downstairs, I saw her in the kitchen with her usual mug of tea. And I could have sworn that I smelled the tea that she always made every Sunday morning. My grandfather even smells it sometimes.

Now that I know better of my grandmother's appearances, I'm still trying to figure out why my little sister never saw or smelled a thing to this very day. And to tell the truth, I enjoy my grandma's visits!
