The Bagua
by k.aquino

I am about to share an experience that I had a few years back. It is, to date, something I cannot fathom. But it happened... and because of it my life changed forever.

It all started one night when I was taking a bus home. A man was sitting beside me. He then stood up and left. I found something wrapped in old newspapers. Thinking it belonged to the man, I called to him, but he didn't seem to hear me. I opened the bulky thing, and found a "bagua" – an octagonal piece of wood with a round mirror in the middle. To those not familiar with it, it is a talisman of a sort, from China, believed to bring good luck to anyone's household who had it. I decided to take it home with me.

I dropped by a nearby bakery to buy some stuff, and the lady attending to me took notice of the bagua. She lifted it and stared at the mirror, saying how lucky I was to find it. In the back of my mind, I thought, indeed I am. but never had I been so wrong.

When I arrived home, I placed the "bagua" above our door and prayed that indeed it would bring us luck, and for the following weeks, it seemed my prayers had been heard. My husband and I were promoted, got huge incentives and raises. I even won a raffle from a nearby convenience store. I thought I was really, really lucky, but scared as well that something might turn up and ruin everything... and indeed something seemed to be destined to do so and would mess everything up big time.

At home, my children, a son and a daughter began telling me stories, like seeing a man peeking through our windows late at night, a woman walking in our den, crickets seemingly hushed to silence by some presence. I didn't pay attention to them, thinking it might be some made up story in my kids' over-active imagination... until I saw them myself. I was at home alone, all the lights went out and I went out our front door to see what could've been wrong. Upon opening the door, a woman in white, veiled and donning tiny, tiny shoes, was walking toward me. I felt an unbelievable urge of fear. I closed the door, and facing my house again, saw three other ghosts: two men and a woman, with rotting faces, closing in on me. I fainted and woke up the following day, spread on the floor.

It was horrid. After that, I consulted a known spiritualist, told him about what happened. He was Chinese in origin and he seemed very keen about the "bagua." He had me bring it to him one time and he told me the story as to why these things had been happening to me. He said the "bagua" was cursed. It belonged to a Chinese Empress who died in a fire and cursed the talisman. Anyone who possessed it would harbor unbelievable luck, but the bagua itself puts a curse and kills anyone who lays sight on the mirror. And odd enough, there was a pattern. The spiritualist advised that I should reject the next luck to come my way, to avoid it or disregard it directly. I thought I had a plan, until one day, my children were out, with a friend of mine. they arrived later the day, they were silent, acting odd and I was a bit perplexed. Then my friend came up to me and said they were dead. I was in a dreaded state, fighting to keep my sanity, hoping it was all a dream or a prank and also knowing it is possible and that it was the end for my loved ones.

Again, I fainted, and woke up and they were gone. After this time, I slipped into a deep depression. My other relatives took me to their care. I wasn't able to find the bagua anywhere. I, to this day, often wonder where it is now and what form of ruin it is inflicting to other people. I am left now without anyone other than relatives all because of the cursed "bagua."
