Telepathic
Cat
by Pat Pfeffer
I had two mature cats at the time, a stoic, calm, longhaired black male named Little Black Imp, and a flaky, nervous, longhaired white female named Nikki. They both had their own distinct personalities. Impy loved cuddling with you and Nikki couldn't be bothered.
Resting on the couch one evening, right around the cat's supper time, I decided to try an experiment. Rather than calling them to me physically, I determined to try to summon them via mental images. I worked on Impy first simply because he always seemed more responsive than Nikki did.
We lived on five acres with a large woods in the back where they both enjoyed exploring and hunting. Consequently, I never knew where they might be. So, staying totally relaxed on the couch with my eyes closed, I visualized Imp leaping onto my chest. I held that image for a minute or so, then began to drift off. Suddenly, I felt a weight on my chest, opened my eyes, and looked into Impy's large yellow green eyes. He had his nose pressed against mine with a curious expression on his face like, 'OK, what do you want?" I was startled, but then began to rationalize... it could just be coincidence, it's close to supper time, he probably is just reminding me of that. I hugged and petted him and set him down.
The real test would be Nikki, for she was a "touch me not" cat. Independent and flighty, she never came to you voluntarily. I began the mental imagery again, seeing her coming to me and jumping onto my chest exactly as Imp had done. Was I ever jarred when a couple of minutes later I felt a sudden weight on my chest. I assumed it was Imp again... but voila!, it was Nikki! I was even more amazed than she to find her there looking into my eyes with a very puzzled expression.
To test the veracity of the results I began using this method of calling them thereafter at various different times of the day, and it worked every time. I'd picture them coming to me, and they would.
The scene shifts. A year or two later I find myself the owner of a 10,000 sq. ft building that we are remodeling into a day care center. I live in the apartment in one wing of the building and I have the cats with me. Because walls are being torn out and shifted, the cats are in their glory exploring every inch of the place. There are even bats in the attic area and I become concerned the cats will get themselves trapped in an irretrievable spot, so I talk to my cousin Rachel about taking the cats temporarily until this work is done. Rachel has a large farm and loves animals. She readily agrees.
Several months pass and the remodeling is done. One morning I awake from a realistic and horrific dream. In the dream I see Rachel's husband in the barn starting up the large tractor with a cutting bar attached. I see Imp cowering in fear. I see the tractor proceeding to begin to mow some of the furrowed fields. I see Imp trying to escape it and throwing himself down into one of the furrows to avoid the cutting bar blades. I see the blades demolish Imp. I awake with such a sense of horror for the image is so realistic it's as if I am there witnessing it.
I am really shaken and concerned so I call my cousin to request that now the remodeling is done I would like Imp returned and she can keep Nikki. "Oh cousin", she says, "I love Impy, you can have Nikki back." I felt I couldn't tell her the real reason for the request for her religious beliefs could not have accepted the facts of the situation. I pled with her and she said she'd have to think about it. My only other recourse would have been to go steal the cat back... and after I had given it to her? I'm in a quandary to say the least. I decide to wait for Rachel's response, and that was an error.
Two days later my daughter calls me to ask, "Mom, did you hear what happened to Impy?" I stopped her right there and said, "Wait, before you tell me, I'll tell you". That's exactly what occurred and how it occurred. Imp had sent me a message to come save him and I blew it.
For years thereafter I grieved for failing Impy. I thought he'd return in the form of another cat, and I would know him when I saw him. That actually may have occurred at this late date, for it has been twenty years since that happening. A large long haired male cat has suddenly appeared and adopted me at the second home we have in Fl. He is insistent and persistent, defending the property from all other animals, and is at my heels as I move around the property. The minute I sit down he's in my lap, and he's doing a lot of talking. He is black, with a white bib and paws, with contrasting white whiskers and eyebrows. I call him Mr. Whiskers. Now I need to learn to understand cat language.
