A Tainted House
by Jeremy Megargee

I was around 10 years old when my family moved to a small house that we rented in Summit Point, West Virginia. In the backyard there was a deep wilderness that seemed to just go on and on. I quickly became friends with our neighbors (also our landlords) who lived across the road from us in a large stone farmhouse. They had a son my age who turned out to become one of my good friends. Ever since I came to that house, I felt that something was wrong, although to this day I can't really describe the feeling. It was not as if the house were haunted, or as if the strange feeling were confined only to the inside of the house... it's really hard to explain.

The first cryptic event happened when my dad opened an old freezer in the home after we had just moved in and found two severed hog heads in it. The previous tenant had been my landlord's grandmother, and she informed me that she had nothing to do with putting those in there and has no clue how they got there in the first place. Over the course of the few years we lived there, several bizarre incidents occurred.

One night I was sleeping when suddenly I was awakened by a long, mournful howl from outside my bedroom window. I can tell you now in all honestly it was not a dog or any other animal making that sound; it almost seemed like a human howling, but it was amplified to the point where no human could make that sound. There was an old antique stove that sat next to our house that had been there ever since we arrived, and sometimes late at night I would hear something slamming and banging against that stove over and over again. I never got up enough courage to go out and take a look, but I can tell you it was as if all the demons of hell had come up and decided to gather their combined power JUST to beat the crud out of that stove.

Then came something that affected not only myself, but my mother as well - the flies. They came as if driven by a plague, hundreds of flies in the house. NO house has that many flies, trust me. My mom got so upset by them that there were times when she would say, "They just come up from the damn floor it seems." In my mother's bedroom there was a smoke detector, and once I was asked to open it up and change the batteries. Upon opening it up, a sickening clump of maggots fell out from inside and onto my mom's bed. It was so bizarre, to this day it haunts me.

Several of our pets disappeared and met terrible fates. My greyhound, Tippy, just vanished one night. The chain that held her to a tree seemed to have been ripped in two. Tippy never ventured far from the house when loose, so this baffled me. Also, my dog, Pal, just crawled under the porch one day and died. He showed no signs of sickness during that day; he just suddenly wiggled his way under there and died, although my dad seems to think he was poisoned. By whom I guess I'll never know. Then my cat Sparkle contracted a HORRIBLE disease that defies all explanation. He was seeming to rot from the inside out. His sides turned blackish and opened up to show his intestines and such. I remember in his suffering he came near me outside one day and I wanted to pet him so badly, but I dared not touch him because of the disease. I cried for that poor cat when he finally just walked off into the woods one day, suffering badly. He never returned.

Sometimes during the late evenings, there would come a terrible squealing/shriek from deep within the woods surrounding our home. My neighbor Al and his children reportedly heard this as well, but had no idea where it came from or what it could be. Another time, myself and the landlord's son were walking in a field near the home and we made our way across some railroad tracks and into the woods. We walked a long ways and stumbled upon a clearing with what I can only describe as a HUMAN TORSO hanging on a rope from a large oak tree. It was stripped of skin and was just a chunk of meat. It scared myself and my friend so badly we ran all the way back to his house. However, we gathered some bravery within ourselves the next day and went looking for it. We found the tree, yet no sign of the torso was there at all.

A friend of mine seemed to think the very town of Summit Point was wrong for some reason. He once told me that he and his brother had taken a walk in the woods and stumbled upon a cave with puddles of blood around its entrance. He then said they returned to next day only to find that the cave had simply vanished; no sign of it was there at all. All I know is that this whole thing confused and frightened me for years... and I wanted to finally get it off my chest. Everything you've read here is solid truth.
