Driverless Car
by L. Workman

When we were kids (10 or 11 years old), my friend Sheila and I used to love to wave and make faces at passing cars or cars that we passed on the highway (with our parents driving, of course!). One summer afternoon we were in the back seat of my mom's car on the way home from the grocery store, doing our usual thing. This was in the early 1970s so seatbelts weren't really worn much back then. We always got on our knees, turned around and looked out the back windshield at cars coming toward us.

This old rusted Chevrolet was slowly catching up to us. Sheila and I were giggling and getting ready to make our best faces and... there was no one driving the car! There was no one in the car at all! We couldn't believe it! It was totally empty rolling down the highway coming toward us and then beside us and then right on past us! Because of the way we were turned around, we could see right into the front windshield of the car for an extended amount of time because it wasn't speeding past us or anything. We started yelling and screaming, telling my mom what we had seen. We tried and tried to get her to catch up with the car but she didn't believe us... Our exit came up and we turned off the highway shortly after that. We talked about it for days and told everybody but no one believed us.
