Uncle's Goodbye
by Amy Haskell

My mother is not the type you would think would believe in ghosts. She's a devout Christian who never dabbled in the paranormal, with the exception of maybe playing around with a Ouija board at sleepovers when she was a kid. But something happened to her when she was around 12 years old that convinced her that ghosts are indeed present.

She was sound asleep in her bed that night, when she woke up for some seemingly unexplainable reason. Years later, she can't remember exactly what time it was, but it was very, very early in the morning, around 2 or 3 a.m. She didn't know what had woken her up so much earlier than usual... she only knew that she was fully awake. Then she looked down at the foot of her bed and, to her horror, there was a white figure standing there.

It strangely resembled her uncle. To my mom's knowledge, this uncle was still alive at the time, so if my mother had not been so completely overtaken with terror at this entity, it would have really puzzled her. The ghost then audibly spoke. "I just came to say goodbye." And it was gone. Somehow, my mother got back to sleep after a time of just lying there, her heart still pounding and her mind still trying to process what happened.

The next day, her parents gave her the bad news. Her uncle had died last night. At the same time the ghost appeared at the end of her bed. My mom has never been one to make up stories or lie. To this day, she swears that this is true, and that she was fully awake when it happened.
