Man with the Hat
by Susan

My son and I moved into this house three and a half years ago. About two or three months after we moved in, I woke up one night and saw streaks of colored lights streaming across my room. I sat up and, at first, thought that it was my eyes needing to adjust, so I opened and closed them a few times only to find that the lights were still moving around my room. I did not feel scared. I thought that I must be half asleep or dreaming. I went back to sleep.

A couple of weeks later, I woke up to the same thing. I reached out my hands to try to touch them. Even though they seemed right above me and my bed, when I reached for them they seemed so far away. Again, I really did not think much about it. One night, in the middle of the night, I woke up and heard my son (2½ years old) playing in his room. This is something that he had NEVER done before. He always slept through the night. When I went to his door, it was only opened about two or three inches... so I stood there and listened to what he was saying. He was sitting on the floor rolling a fire truck away from him and laughing and talking like he was talking and playing with someone. He has always like to sit with me on the floor and roll cars back and forth. I opened the door and told him to get back in bed and go to sleep; it was late. Without protest, he said ok and went to bed.

The next morning, he ran in my room and asked me where the man with the hat on was. I said, "What man?" He said, "The man with the hat." I did not know what to say, so I changed the subject.

The next night, Christopher came running in my room in the middle of the night and jumped in my bed, pulling the covers right up to his nose. I keep a bright night light in the bathroom, so when I opened my eyes, I could see his face clearly. At the time, I was so tired and did not think much of it, I just picked him up to take him back to his room. He was shaking, and I thought that he was just cold. He never said a word during this entire time. I put him back in his bed, covered him up and went back to bed. I noticed that Christopher was acting a bit strange over the next couple of days, but never thought about that night until... he came to me and said that he saw a man with no skin in the bathroom that night. My heart just sank! All of the things that seemed so unimportant that night that he came to my bed all came together. He was so terrified that he was shaking and couldn't even verbalize his fear. I felt like such a bad mother that my son could be sooo scared and I did not even know it. The rest of that night must have been hell for him.

In December of 2003, Christopher and I were at my godfather's house visiting. I came in to the living room to see what Christopher was doing and found him standing at the foot of a very tall entertainment center staring at the top. I asked him what he was looking at and he pointed to a picture and said, "That's him, mommy." I said, "Who?" He said, "The man with the hat!" The picture that he was looking at was a picture of my godfather's brother, who had only seen Christopher once when he was five months old and had died of liver cancer on August 5, 2003.

Christopher said that that was the man that was playing fire trucks with him. He was a trucker and always wore a hat. When I thought back as to when it was that he was playing in his room, I realized that it was about a month after he died. Christopher would never have remembered him, and the picture was not put up until after he passed away. Chris had never seen him or a picture of him before. I believe that my godfather's brother was here as a guardian angel to protect my son from the evil spirit (the man with no skin). My son has never said anything to me about either one of them in the past three years; however, I still occasionally awake to the colored lights that fly around my room.
