45 Minutes Vanished
by Maggie H.

Several years ago, my daughter and I were getting ready to go to work. Every other day we were snappy at each other because both of us were always almost late - there was a lot of screaming involved to get my teen-aged daughter ready in the morning. For the first time in our life we were ready early. Before that day, I watched the clock obsessively - I looked at the clock on the microwave, the coffee maker, the living room clock, the bedroom clock and I kept time by the morning shows I watched. When Get Smart ended, I had to turn off the television and leave for work.

I was watching TV in the den waiting for my daughter when she came in early. We sat across from each other talking and laughing until Get Smart went off. We were both ready early that day and in a good mood (which never happened because we weren't morning people). As soon as we turned off the television, we picked up our things and walked 25 feet to the car. We drove on a gravel road that we normally avoided. It was a street that was rarely traveled. We chatted happily all the way to work where she would drop me off and she would drive the car to her school.

When we reached my school, it was quiet with no traffic around. Kids and teachers should have been outside, but no one was outside. Parents should have been dropping kids off, but there were no parents in sight. I was shocked and asked my daughter how we got there too early. She turned to face me and said that we weren't early, but were very late. "Look at the clock," she said calmly. The clock showed that an hour had passed. The trip from our house to school took 15 minutes, but that morning the trip had taken an hour! I wonder about that day, but she has never wanted to talk about that morning. She chooses to act as if nothing strange happened that day.
