Psychic Australian Shepherd

My husband and I had just moved to a different house from where we had spent the last six years. Our new neighbors had a year-old Australian Shepherd named Patches who adopted us almost on sight. Since I have a tendency to get attached to animals, my husband suggested that I pay as little attention to the dog as possible.

One cold January night, my husband came home late (around midnight) from a bridge game, and told me that Patches wouldn't let him into the house. The dog kept blocking the front door. My husband finally had to push him out of the way. I thought that was just something else to add to his odd behavior off the evening. Patches had been trying to get into the house for the last three or four hours. Since the dog had been behaving so strangely, my husband and I stayed up and discussed the possible causes. That led to a conversation about other animals we had known that suddenly started acting peculiar. We didn't get to bed until after two in the morning.

Around 3:30, we were awakened by the dog howling. He never howls! We new something HAD to be wrong. We got up, got dressed, and were headed for the front door when our smoke detector in the basement went off. Our furnace was on fire! That was was Patches had been trying to tell us. About a month later, we were moving to a house we had bought that had a large fenced yard. Our neighbors that owned Patches were also moving, but they were moving to a rented trailer near a large highway. They asked if we would take Patches to live with us. They didn't have to ask twice! He is still with us, nine years later.
