The Farm
House
by Jason K.
When I was a child, we lived in an 100-year-old farm house. The house was said to have a lot of history as it served as a safe house during the Civil War. It had underground tunnels beneath it and supposedly a lot of people were hid from enemies or trouble there. But that is beside the story I have for you.
The day we were moving out of the house, I was shooting the basketball around on the hoop my dad had put on the barn for me. As I was playing, I had a VERY strong sense that someone was watching me. The hair on my neck stood on end and I got the goosebumps. When I looked up and into one of the windows on the barn, I saw an older man with a big black hat and glasses watching me play. I was puzzled and walked into the barn and saw no one there. I got frightened and ran in the house and said a word to no one.
About three years ago, I finally got up enough nerve to tell my mom and dad about the incident. They looked at each other and then told me stories of their own. My dad was mowing the yard on the riding lawn mower one day when he got the same feeling. He looked up at the attic window and saw a man - of the same description - watching him. My parents said they often heard sounds of men playing poker, laughing, joking, having fun, and it would get very loud. When they would go upstairs to see who was there, there was no one. They never got the feeling that the men would harm them, and that they actually liked our family and was protecting us.
My dad and my mom told me a story that I will never forget after that. One day the furnace quit, and my dad went down to check out what was wrong. My dad noticed an abundance of rats in the basement. He yelled to my mom out loud up the stairs that something needed to be done about it. After my dad figured out what was wrong with the furnace, he went to the store to buy the parts he needed to fix it. The next morning when he went down in the basement, 12 dead rats lay dead, in a perfect square shape, tail-to-head! My family of two brothers and a sister and my mom and dad then all sat down and began to share stories of occurrences in that house. My bother grew to enjoy the spirits' presence, and said that once he got comfortable with the presence, a lot of the men's conversations became much more clear to him when they were playing cards and he actually laughed out loud at one of their jokes! Lately, I have been having dreams every so often of being at that house, and the spirits' presence is always there. I really think the spirits loved our family and are maybe still are with us.
