Creepy Air Travel Dream
by Teri B.

In 1996, we planned to visit Germany where my boyfriend's mother lived and was dying eventually that year of pancreatic cancer. It was sad, as we all knew her prognosis but she wasn't in the worst stages by then. We had gone three times previously to Germany before in the summer and stayed with his mom.

In about May or June, I had called different airlines not long before we left in July to find the best deal. One airline I called was a trip leaving with TWA and going via Paris. I told the reservationist we'd think about it and I certainly would have loved to go there. For some reason, we chose Lufthansa instead, which flew directly to Germany and leaving the 8th of July.

A few days before our trip, I had a strange dream about being in an oddball place, like it was surrounded by darkness, yet there was this strange soothsayer's voice who's only visible feature was a mouth surrounded by a sheet. This voice said, "The plane will sink into the sea." I thought the whole thing was creepy, as I'd never had a dream like that before as much as I dreaded flying and the mouth was disturbing enough! Somehow I felt like the warning wasn't for me and I didn't think about this dream again really until a major catastrophe happened after we had already been in Germany for a few days.

That morning on the news was the major story of TWA Flight 800 - the doomed flight that mysteriously broke up into bits in the air soon after takeoff over Long Island (where we live by the ocean by the way) instead of landing in Paris. My boyfriend's mother had this TV with bad reception and only a few channels came in in the bedroom where we were staying. That morning, I had the TV turned on so I could listen to the language to help me learn it. There was a channel which had a bizarre medical show on regarding some sort of mouth surgery operation. My weird premonitory dream was coming back to me and I totally had chills, because the mouth was surrounded by a sheet on the operating table. Then when I walked out to breakfast, my boyfriend had told me the news about Flight 800!
