Weird Camp Creature
by Roddy D.

When I was seven years old, my parents sent me to a swimming summer camp in Northern Ontario called "Camp Catchacoma." One day while we were playing hide-and-go-seek with our counselors, I ran under a small overhanging of trees and ferns just about 20 feet from our cabin. I was in the shade and well hidden from the other campers and watched them run by. As I turned my head to follow the route of one of my cabin mates, he went just out of view around a corner in the path. As he left my view, my eyes focused not on the path a good 40 feet away, but to a tree branch just half a foot away.

This sequence took place in about 0.5 seconds! As my eyes focused, this little creature sitting on the tree branch also stopped following the little camper go around the corner and turned around and looked at me! It let out a blood-curdling screech, opened it's glowing eyes very wide and flapped its wings, beating the branches of the small tree that it sat in. I freaked out! I ran so fast out of that shade, screaming and flailing my arms making the "Egge Beeggee" noises.

It's hard to describe what it looked like. It was shaped like a tiny owl, with huge glowing yellow eyes. It was brown, but did not look like it had feathers. It looked like an owl, but it was not an owl. It may sound strange, but I sensed intelligence in it. I spooked it as much as it spooked me. I told my counselors where it was, and they could not find anything. I remember being very scared for the rest of the day and the night following. Just knowing that that thing was 20 feet from my cabin was enough to have me freaked all night.
