Mother's Command
by Carolina C.

I was the middle child in a family of five kids. Dad was a carpenter who had just built our beautiful home. He was gone sunup to sunset, working at various job sites. Mom worked all day to make sure the house was clean, mouths fed and all felt loved. There was a constant stream of neighborhood kids also in and out of the house and yard. We always did our share of squabbling. Trying to keep the peace, mom would wave a spoon or a switch at us and say, "Jesus knows who is to blame" or simply "Jesus Knows!" How she ever had time too read the Bible was a mystery, but it became apparent that she must have done so.

One hot long summer day, we were all being our selfish, obnoxious selves, fighting about the least little thing. Slapping each other, running up and down the hall, yelling, screaming, throwing things at one another. Mom was at her wits end. We were all in the kitchen and saw her grab a handful of salt out of the saltbox. She threw the salt in our general direction and yelled at the top of her voice, "Depart from me, evil doer of iniquity!" At that instant, all of us kids started to cry and there was a powerful whoosh of wind that shot through the kitchen and down the long hallway. Various doors slammed shut and the house felt like it shook! The thing is, we all saw a huge, dark shadow fly from us with the wind; it disappeared at the end of the hall. The aftermath of the disturbance was that everyone was immediately sorry, crying, hugging, abolishing and indeed, good children.

Did mom know she had the power to exorcise her bedeviled children? I think not. She was willing to do anything for a little peace.
