Conversation
with a Cat
by Gene
This happened in 1992 when I was 19 years old. At that time, I was a confused young man, looking to find my maturity and way in the world. I had left home because of problems between me and my father.
Being homeless at the time, I spent most of my days at the public library. At night I would just wander by myself, looking for somewhere to rest. One particular night in March, I stopped to rest on the steps of an old print shop. The night was cool and the air smelled and felt like there would be rain soon.
Out of nowhere, a small gray cat came and sat beside me on the steps. The first few minutes, I sat there caressing and talking to the cat, nothing unusual. Then I asked it a question just for rhetorical purposes, and to my shocking amazement, it answered me – in clear English! I jumped back in shock, not wanting to believe my ears. Then in a proper voice the cat said, "Yes, you heard it. I did say that." At this point, my nerves were a mess, and my hair chilled on the back of my neck. I just could not believe I was sitting there talking to a cat.
The cat and I sat and talked for a good 15 minutes. The more we talked, the easier my nerves became. When I asked it how it could talk, it told me I was in a higher state of consciousness, and that I was actually speaking its language. After we talked for a while, the cat told me he was to meet his brothers soon, and took off into the night.
I have only told two people about this since it happened, and they both laughed at me. But I swear to you, on my very being, that it happened. Many years have passed, and I have since gotten my life together. But I will always remember that chilly March night in 1992, when I had a conversation with a cat.
