Big Brother's Spirit
by Steph
My little brother passed away when I was 12 years old. He was only two and a half months old, and his cause of death was SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Needless to say, it was devastating for my family.
A few years after his passing we were blessed with my younger sister. She took her first breath after birth and then quit breathing. She was rushed to NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She spent the first week of her life in ICU and finally came home to us.
As she grew, she would often watch as some unseen "thing" moved around the room and would often talk to herself.... or so it seemed. When she was nearing three years old, she was playing in the playroom by herself (which used to be the nursery of my little brother) when she started giggling and just talking away. Now she was not quite three at the time and therefore knew nothing of the brother that passed before she was born. She was simply too young to understand, so we said nothing about him to her.
The day she was playing in the room by herself, my stepfather and I decided to check up on her and see what she was doing and why she was giggling so much. We found her sitting in the corner of the room staring up at the wall, talking away. When my stepfather asked her who she was talking to, she turned to us with a look that was much too mature for her tender age and replied, "I'm talking to Shawn, daddy!"
Shawn was my little brother's name... the brother she knew nothing about. It made us all feel a little unnerved, but still warm, knowing that "big brother" was watching out for his younger sister from beyond the grave.
