Peyote Drummer
by Begay

I live on the Navajo Nation in Arizona. The surrounding area consists of mountains and desert. I just had the luck of living on the base of the mountain. This area is filled with stories of skinwalkers, Bigfoot, ghosts and other strange activity. I really didn't believe in this stuff when I first moved here, but that changed when I started experiencing it. I've had a lot of paranormal things happen to me over the years, but this is one of the most memorable.

I was about 15 and I was living in a trailer up the mountain. I could never sleep at night because we would have things hitting the trailer and scratch the windows at night. Because of this, I would stay awake mostly just watching TV. As I was sitting there, I saw a shadow move through the hallway light. And then I could hear the doors opening and closing. I thought someone else might be awake, so I got up to check and there was no one. Everybody was asleep, so I figured my mind was playing tricks on me. So I went back to the TV.

After about five minutes, I noticed that there was something peeking its head out from behind the cabinet the TV was on. As I looked closely, I noticed that there were two heads! As soon as I saw that, I ran to the light switch and turned it on and started looking for it - or them - but I couldn't see it anywhere. I gave up looking for it after I had checked the kitchen, cabinets, closets, anywhere it might have gone.

Then I heard something. It sounded like music, but since I had checked the rooms I knew that no radio was on. So I turned off the TV and as I concentrated on the sound, I realized that it was a peyote drum and that I could hear a person singing. I figured someone was outside, so I went to the window with a flashlight, but I couldn't see anything out there. But that person was still singing. The closer I got to the window, the louder it got, and I realized at that moment that whoever was singing was standing at the window looking at me, only I couldn't see him.

For weeks after this happened we would occasionally hear that drum outside. And each time we heard it, we would have things happen inside. I'm only posting this to see if anybody else on the reservation has heard that peyote drummer.
