Missouri Gorillas

I enjoy reading your site so I thought I would pass on a story that was handed down in my brother-in-laws family. His great grandparents lived in Wright County, Missouri in the 1850s. In that area the people kept seeing what they called a gorilla. They were concerned that it might harm one of their children. So it was decided that they would kill it. The next time it was seen it was shot.
The shot didn't kill it, but it was wounded. It took off and the people followed it. It headed for a cave and when it got to the entrance another gorilla came out. They shot this one also. Upon hearing the shot, more of them came out of the cave. In their own words, what his great grandparents said was that they had killed a large band of gorillas.
