Flowers from Jack
by Schaetzli

This event took place this past week (August, 2008) in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I had a close friendship with a man, whom I shall call Jack. He lived in Switzerland; I live in Canada. We had been lovers, but circumstances did not allow for us to continue the relationship. Still,we remained close friends, and he promised to always take care of me. Suddenly and unexpectedly, he passed away in May of this year. It was a shock to everyone who knew him as he was the pinnacle of fitness, or so it seemed. It was hard for me to accept. I loved him and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. The strange thing is that every year for the past nine years, he has sent me flowers on my birthday. I was sad to think that this year I would not receive them from him.

Strangely enough, however, just before my birthday, I received an e-mail from a former acquaintance, Mischa, a man who I know had had a crush on me in the past, but with whom I have not had contact in the past five years. He wanted to know if I was still working at the same place. I said yes. That man lives in Switzerland. The next day, a beautiful bouquet of flowers was delivered to me. They were from him, sent from Switzerland. I wrote to say thank you, but, oddly enough, I have not heard from him since.

It seems too coincidental. For five years, I had not heard a word from that man, then all of a sudden in the same year that Jack dies, he remembers my birthday out of the blue and decides to send me flowers? I want to believe that the flowers were from Jack. I can't help but believe that he put the thought into Mischa's head to send the flowers to let me know that he is out there and still thinking of me.
