Is it possible to communicate with ghosts? If so, what should the nature of that communication be?
The answer is yes, but the nature of the communication may vary. If you are already "seeing" or "hearing" the ghost, there's no reason why you can't simply ask the apparition what he or she wants, how you can help him/her, what you might do for him/her. You might be surprised to actually get an answer, but it's not all that uncommon. The form of that answer would vary depending on your experience of the apparition (might be a visual answer, a feeling or somebody simply verbally answering).
On the other hand, it may require finding someone else sensitive enough (or simply not afraid or stressed out about the ghost) to do the communicating for you.
Have you worked with EVP? What's your opinion of it?
I have not worked much with EVP (electronic voice phenomena) directly, though on a few occasions, videotape of our investigations have had unaccounted-for human voices.

My opinion of EVP is that one must be extremely careful not to jump to conclusions. I have heard a large number of static-filled or garble-sounded tapes, where the persons playing it for me are absolutely certain there's a specific word or phrase instead of the non-words (and non-voices) I hear. Too much of this is like an auditory ink-blot test.
Beyond the unusual though normal explanations for unusual sounds (and even voices) on tape, one must allow for the possibilities that:
- the sounds/voices come from a haunting not an intelligent apparition or
- that the sounds/voices are created on the tape/media by living minds via the same mind-over-matter process that would allow an apparition to affect the tape.
Remember, ghosts don't have voice-boxes, otherwise everyone would hear the voice and every recorder would record it. For them to "appear" on film, tape, or digital media, they have to directly affect that media.
We living folks have powerful psychic abilities, both informational (ESP) and motivational (mind over matter or psychokinesis), though they are suppressed in favor of our normal senses and motive factors. Apparitions are nothing but consciousness - no sensory organs, no limbs, etc. Everything they do is via mind/psychic abilities.
In general, though, we place more emphasis on the experience of the people involved (the witnesses) than the tech, simply because no technology has been proven to be error free; neither are people, of course, but at least we can ask them questions. And none of the technology was designed to measure/sense ghosts.
