| Encounters with Angels | |

Many people believe that angels are all around us. Part of their mission on Earth, they believe, is to occasionally help humans in times of danger, crisis or some other desperate need. If this is true, we can only wonder why these "guardian angels" seem to help certain people and not others, or lend their assistance only for particular events. Is there, perhaps, a greater plan they are helping to fulfill? The authors of the stories that follow would almost certainly answer "yes" to that question, since they firmly believe that have personally experienced the guiding hands of angels.
Slap on
the Shoulder
I don't believe in
ghosts, guardian angels or God. I have been an atheist all of my life, while
respecting all religions and beliefs. Some years ago, however, I did have an
experience that I couldn't explain - and left me wondering. I had been working in
the United States and had returned to live in England after four years. During
my time away, my father died of cancer and I made a brief trip home for
the funeral. Apart from that once, this was my first time home since his death.
I arranged to take my nephews on a day out at a local amusement park and zoo. I picked them up, seeing that they were safely buckled up in the rear seat, together with my youngest daughter who was eight years old. My 12-year-old daughter was in the front with me as we set off on a short journey that I had made many times in the past. I had a sad feeling come over me during the journey, as I realized this route was also the one I took when visiting my father, and I felt I was grieving for him for the first time. The road we were on is a divided highway with two lanes in each direction and lots of blind curves that can be taken at speed. As was my custom, I was well over the speed limit, but enjoying a clear road and a fast car. Suddenly, I felt a violent slap on my shoulder. I slowed down as I turned to complain to the kids to stop fooling around. As I turned back, still slowing down, a truck came into view around the next bend. I stood on the brake and came to a halt inches from contact. The truck had jackknifed across the two lanes and, had I not slowed down, there would have been no way of avoiding a serious accident.
After my heart had stopped
racing, I asked the kids which of them had smacked my shoulder. They all
confirmed that, as they were buckled up, it wasn't possible to reach me, and
that no one had moved at all. That evening I related all this to my sister, the
mother of my nephews, and she pointed out that the incident occurred just where
I would make the turn-off for my father's house, and that all his grandchildren
were in the car with me. She really believes that he intervened that day and,
for a while, I had some doubts and gave a lot of thought to it. I still can't
explain it, and no longer try. But I swear that I can still feel the blow to my
shoulder as though someone gave my a hard punch. The odd thing is, that the blow
was to the front of my shoulder, not from behind, where the children were.

Steered
to Safety
When my son was
small, he was going to summer school. One afternoon, I drove my car to pick him
up at the school. I was early so I stopped at a 7 Eleven to get a Big Gulp. It
was too big for me to drink all at once and it was getting time for me to pick
up my son, so I put it on the floor of the car. It fell over and I bent down to
pick it up. I lost control of the car. There were cars parked all over that
street, but my car went in between two of them and came to a standstill on a
little hill in front of a townhouse. I believe there was a guardian angel
watching over me that day and steering the car. Another time, I was in the
hospital after a heart attack. My blood pressure was very high. I was given too
much medication and my heart stopped. I passed out. I remember talking to
someone just before I woke up, but I can't remember what was said.

Warm and
Peaceful Aura
My experience with a
guardian angel came six months after my husband died. I had bought some new
mattresses from the furniture store, and they were being delivered. I bought the
mattresses at a store some 30 miles from my home, so no one in that furniture
store knew that I had just suffered a devastating loss. The delivery man came up
to the door with the mattresses. He brought each one inside and put them beside
the wall. I told him that I would put them on the bed later. My 11-year-old son
was standing in the living room with me when the man was leaving. I made some
small talk with the gentleman, but revealed nothing of my life, my loss or my
sadness. As the delivery man opened the door to leave, he turned around and
said, "Lady, I have to tell you something." He said that he hoped I
would not think him weird or anything. He told me he saw an aura in my living
room - an aura that was peaceful and warm and loving. He also said he felt as if
there was a lot of love in my home. He went on to tell me that he has been able
to see auras since he was in a terrible accident in his early 20s. He almost
died. I had never before laid eyes on this man. He could not possibly have known
my plight. My son and I just stared at him. I told him my husband died several
months back. He was not surprised by that revelation. He just felt as if he
needed to tell me about the love and peace he felt in my home. I thanked him for
telling me. It really made my day. My son still smiles when I tell this story.

Saved
from the Fire
On July 29, 2001, I
had an experience that I know I had to have the help of a guardian angel. My
husband is 77 years of age and he has the onset of Alzheimer's. I had a candle
burning in the kitchen and I was in the bedroom folding up clothes that I had
just washed. I heard my husband say, "I need help." I called to him
and said, "What is wrong?" As I was calling to him, I was making my
way to the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen door, I saw a huge flame coming
from the drain board and I ran and grabbed some type of cloth and threw it into
the sink. My husband got one and threw into the garbage can and I grabbed the
can and poured water in it to stop the blaze. There was still one piece of cloth
on the drain board burning. I grabbed it and threw it into the sink where the
water was still running and I put out the fire. Neither my husband nor got
burned and the only damage was a burn on the Formica about one half the size of
a saucer. We had to have help from someone, and I just know it was a guardian
angel because for some reason, my husband had put the kitchen towel over the
candle and caused the fire. It took me a while to clean it up, but I was so
thankful we were both alright. I do believe in guardian angels and I always feel
secure knowing they are there.
