Many people think the world is becoming a stranger place: that "paranormal" events are taking place with greater frequency and more intensity; that orb photos, EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) and the success of mediums like John Edward are indications that we are becoming more in tune with the "other side"; that incredible stories about crop circles, cattle mutilations, UFOs and monsters (like Chupacabras and Bigfoot) are appearing more frequently.

Whether it's true or not that paranormal activity is escalating, 2002 was another year for all manner of high strangeness, psychic wonders and the unexplained. Here are some of the top paranormal events that took place in 2002:

January, 2002

• Harry Potter condemned. Religious groups burned "Harry Potter" books, citing the wizardry and magic stories they tell as "masterpieces of satanic deception." A well-known Catholic exorcist agreed that the devil was behind Harry.
• Dogs go mad. A pack of feral dogs went wild in New York City, killing several animals in the Staten Island zoo and attacking several joggers.
• UFOs. A new UFO flap hit Belgium in December, 2001 and January, 2002, in which there were many sightings of huge, black, triangle-shaped UFOs; this was similar to the 1989-90 flap in the same area.
• Atlantis. French geologist and prehistorian Jacques Collina-Girard presented research suggesting that Atlantis was a real place - a small mid-channel island sitting in what is now the Strait of Gibraltar.
• NDEs. ABC News reported that scientists have validated the near-death experience.

• Tail baby god. Crowds flocked to Indian temples to see a Muslim baby with a "tail" (photo) who is believed to be the reincarnation of a Hindu god.
• Shark virgin birth. Scientists were puzzled after the "virgin birth" of a baby shark at a US zoo that has no male sharks.
• Psychic solace. A study revealed that More Americans turn to psychics following Sept. 11 attacks.
• Remote viewers consulted. Certain remote viewers claimed that the US government sought their help since 9/11, which might this explain "credible, nonspecific threats."
• Mummy's curse strikes again. Three eight-year-old girls were taken to hospital after suddenly feeling ill as they looked at the sarcophagus of the pharaoh Ini in Turin, Italy's Egyptian Museum.
• Cattle mutilation.A mutilated cow and its unborn calf were found mutilated in Larose, Louisiana.
• Power of prayer.A San Francisco researcher investigated into whether prayer can heal even if the person doesn't know he's being prayed for.

• UFOs.A contactee predicted that a UFO would make an appearance at the closing ceremonies of the Olympic games in Salt Lake City. (It never showed.)

February, 2002

• Vampires exist. A British researcher of strange phenomena theorized that animal mutilations might be caused by real-life vampires.
• Bigfoot.Footprints of a large, two-legged, non-human creature were found in Monroe County, Indiana.
• Feral child.A wild feral child, dubbed the Romanian Wolf Boy by the press, was found in a Romanian forest and believed to have lived there for years.
• Mystery hum.An unexplained hum - a low-pitched rumbling noise - in Kokomo, Indiana was causing citizens headaches, pains and even nosebleeds.
• Psychic trouble.Miss Cleo and her Psychic Network continued to come under legal attack through many lawsuits.
• Elvis.A psychiatrists claimed that he was still treating Elvis Presley - and that he had DNA evidence to prove it.
• Vampires in Columbia.Police in Bogata said
groups of "vampires" began stopping passers-by at gunpoint and forcing them to bare their necks. The vampires then pierce their vein with a razor and take it in turns to drink their blood.
• Sheep go mad.In the UK, some sheep - grass-eaters by nature - began attacking and eating birds.
• Squirrelgoes mad.In Crestline, California, A squirrel chased a primary school class and their teacher out of their room - then chased them back inside.
• Monkeyman returns. Bizarre attacks attributed to a "monkeyman" were again reported in India. There were a rash of such attacks in 2001.
• Cyclops skulls. Strange one-eyed skulls were found in a limestone cave in the Philippines.

March, 2002

• Superhuman strength.A woman in Concord, New Hampshire lifted a van off of her husband after it rolled on top of him when he was working on it. He had only minor injuries.
• Mars ice.Scientists announced that the Mars Odyssey spacecraft has detected significant amounts of hydrogen - related to ice - in the south polar region of the planet.
• Europa life.A planetary scientist says a combination of physical conditions on one of the moons of Jupiter might not only make life possible but also encourage it to evolve.
• Rare coincidence. Seventy-year-old twin brothers were run over by trucks in Norway and killed while cycling in separate accidents within hours of each other.
• Oliver a chimp.An unusual creature named Oliver whose upright walk and remarkable behavior caused some to think that he might be a "missing link" or a human-chimp hybrid was found to be all chimp through genetic testing.
• Nessie.A new 3-1/2 minute video was shot of the Loch Ness Monster.
• Dead again.A 72-year-old German woman woke up in the morgue, then promptly died again.
• Close encounter.A woman in Australia's Northern Territory claimed an encounter with "silvery character looking people" that came out of a triangular craft.
