"I don't know who's reading this, but I would like someone who has experience listening to EVP to hear my story. I have always loved ghost programs -- Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, Ghost Adventures, A Haunting -- and I have seen every episode of every show. I've never tried to hunt ghosts myself, but always had an interest in them. My family has believed in psychics and even seen a few, I have not.
"I recently purchased an RCA digital voice recorder, not for ghosts, but for my stand-up act. I'm a comedian and bought it to play back my material and see how I could improve. I wanted to try it out to see how well the mic worked, so I left it in an empty room for two hours. I haven't listened to the whole two hours, maybe 45 minutes, but I thought it was funny that I picked up a lot of bumps and sounds. Nothing I thought was paranormal, just the high quality of the microphone.
"So it's been sitting on my dresser in 'sleep" mode' for a few weeks. Sleep mode makes you push the on button, wait 3 seconds, then you can record. I had my uncle visiting me and my parents visiting from Ohio. My uncle is the only family my dad has left. His mom, dad, sister, brother, and sister's husband have all passed. All but his parents died before the age of 56. So they were out at lunch yesterday before they left for home, and I thought to myself (not outloud) that it would be neat to try to get some EVP by asking his family to come through, now that we're all together.
"So I was on the back porch, went into my room, picked the DVR recorder up off my dresser, and then I went to go pee. I didn't turn anything on, nor did I slam it down. I picked it up, took five steps, sat it down and started to pee, thinking of what I was going to ask. I flushed the toilet and the bathroom lights flickered, like a surge. It happens all the time. When I picked up my DVR, I saw the red light on. Thinking nothing of it, I pushed off.
"There was a 53-second file that had been recorded, so I listened to it. Now, I had no radios on, no TV on, no one was home, except me and the cats. What got my attention -- and is causing me to shake even now -- was what I heard on the recorder. This is not a joke in any way and I honestly want you to know that I did not turn it on or hit any buttons. As God is my witness, this happened on its own.
"In the first two seconds of the tape you can hear someone say, 'Mommy?' And someone answers, 'Yeah.' All in an electronic voice that I could have never made. Then the weird part. The reason is that I want a stranger to listen to it, not my family. I have a wart on my leg, just below my crotch. No one else knew. I was looking at it before I started pissing, and on the tape, right around 12 seconds in, you hear a robotic voice say, 'Hide the warts' -- freaking me out completely. And at the end, with about 7 seconds left, right after the toilet flushes, you can hear, 'Did ya wipe?' spoken fast and robotic. Then I turned it off.
"I don't have any software to filter it, and would like to know what it is. Please have someone listen and let me know what they think."
I had a hard time hearing the various things that Jay believes are on the recording, but I do think it's rather unusual. I'm sure he'd appreciate any feedback from readers who can listen to it and figure out what's going on. -- S.W.
