This incident took place sometime between 1985 and 1990 in Nottingham, England. At the time, I worked with a gentleman in his 60s who was lame in one leg and walked with a stick. He was always at work by 8:15 a.m. and would habitually stop for a short rest in the open area just at the other end of the corridor leading to the room where we both worked.
This particular morning, he was late and I was concerned that he had not yet appeared. I think it was about 8:20 a.m. when I crossed the corridor into the room opposite. As I did so, I glanced up the corridor to my left and saw my colleague standing there catching his breath.
I thought to myself, "Ah, there he is," and relaxed, thinking nothing more about it and went about my work. Then just after 9:00 a.m., my colleague suddenly walked into our room. Surprised, I said, "Where have you been? I saw you up the corridor at 8:20 a.m." He replied he had only just come in as he had had trouble starting his car that morning.
