Mysterious entities of the Pacific Northwest
Mankind's imagination has always been excited by the possibilities of unknown regions. Thus, a seemingly limitless universe invites speculation about extraterrestrials; the world's largely unexplored oceans and seas, even deep lakes, prompt thoughts of leviathans; similarly, vast wilderness areas of the globe spark belief in other strange creatures, including various man-beasts; and belief in the great, imagined "Other Side" leads to tales of such entities as ghosts and spirits...

These boots are made for ... haunting
Old Mr. Boots has scared hundreds down in the Vaults under Edinburgh's South Bridge -- preferably blonde women in their mid-20s. "Men are fairly safe," says Gary, a sturdy Scotsman with a bushy red beard who's been leading groups for Mercat Tours down into the Vaults under the Scottish capital for several years. Nobody knows who Mr. Boots was in his living days. But the hateful spirit certainly does not approve of visitors wandering around in the Vaults, where he got stuck after his death some time in the 1800s. To scare the living away, he breathes heavily, invisibly walks around with pounding steps, pulls hair, punches, pinches, and sometimes even shows up...

Beware pseudo-skepticism
On January 29th, 2005, we were talking about the James Randi $1 Million Paranormal Challenge in the chat room. If you don't know what the Challenge is, the short version is that this ex-magician, James Randi, is willing to give a million dollars to anyone who can prove something paranormal. It's common for people to ask us why we don't take the Challenge with all the stuff we talk about on PsiPog. Clearly we qualify for the paranormal, and it would seem like easy money. While talking in the chat room, annie made the observation that the prize was in the form of bonds, and not cash. She tried to explain to me how bonds can be "worth" a million dollars legally, but in reality could be completely worthless...

Evaluating a half-century of Bigfoot evidence
Though sightings of the North American Bigfoot date back to the 1830s (Bord 1982), interest in Bigfoot grew rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. This was spurred on by many magazine articles of the time, most seminally a December 1959 True magazine article describing the discovery of large, mysterious footprints the year before in Bluff Creek, California. A half century later, the question of Bigfoot's existence remains open. Bigfoot is still sought, the pursuit kept alive by a steady stream of sightings, occasional photos or footprint finds, and sporadic media coverage. But what evidence has been gathered over the course of fifty years? And what conclusions can we draw from that evidence?..

Chasing X-files - Alamo Heights man revels in tales of paranormal, UFOs
Dennis Stacy, a researcher of UFOs and the scientifically unexplainable, says mystery lovers get a bad rap. While seekers of "knowledge" are perceived as heroic, "mystery" devotees often get portrayed as weirdos or people with loose grips on reality...

Mysterious lights spotted over Phoenix, again
Nearly a decade after the highly publicized 'Phoenix Light Phenomenon', more strange lights have appeared in the night sky over downtown Phoenix. Tuesday night, mysterious lights lit up the western skies over Phoenix and soon after, phones began ringing off the hook at radio, television and police stations from witnesses wondering what the lights were...

Ghosts find a home at Royal Roads
There's way more going on at Hatley Castle, the landmark at Royal Roads University, than academic study and scholarly endeavors, a report by occult specialists suggests. Some staff at the castle wondered if the building was haunted and a report on an overnight visit by occult investigators last fall seems to confirm those suspicions. "When we first arrived inside the castle, I saw a grayish mist...on the staircase in the main foyer area - it appeared to have a long skirt," said one of five investigator in the report...

What is Psi?
These days, the word 'psi' has almost become synonymous with the word 'parapsychology'. But what does it mean?..

Selling a haunted house? Maybe you should tell the buyer
Khristina Lorenz bought her first home in September. It's small, "but, hey, it's mine." The two-bedroom house sits beside a large, old cemetery in a calm Independence neighborhood; traffic on the busy Noland Road humming nearby. Her house is busy, too - but not with traffic. Khristina bought the house from her boyfriend. He'd told stories that, late at night, doors would rattle like someone was trying to open them. But no one was ever there...
