Birmingham named "weirdest place" in the UK
It’s official: Birmingham is the weirdest place to live in the UK. With freakish weather, including a tornado and a shower of frogs and tales of alien visits, the Second City comes first place in a spotters’ guide to the country’s real twilight zones. Almost two-thirds of Brummies believe in the supernatural after reports of giant hailstones hitting city streets and Martians dropping in for mince pies at the Rowley Regis home of Jean Hingley in 1979. Dr Kenny Webster, resident scientist at Birmingham Science Museum Thinktank, said: "It will come as no surprise to the residents of Birmingham that we live in our own twilight zone.”..

Pinky expedition: High walking
Loren Coleman: In the quest for cryptids, various lines of inquiry usually are pursued to discover the realm of mundane observations that may have been converted into the extraordinary. Today, I look at the role of crocodilians, especially the American alligator, in any confusion with Pinky...

Sleep apnoea
The first thing I knew about maybe having sleep apnoea was at the doctors early last year. I mentioned my re-curring nightmares, where a monster, demon, ogre, whatever, is pressing down on my chest. The more I struggle, the heavier the weight. I don't know which part of sleep it is in, but the more I try to struggle the worse it gets. I have to wake myself up, which is hard to do. I guess I have dreams within dreams (I have them at other times, too,) but it turns out that when I think I have woken up I am still asleep. It takes a lot of effort, and prayer, to wake up sometimes...

See ghost hunters in Waverly
The Waverly Opera House will host a gathering of folks from across the country who spend their time searching for things that go bump in the night. The program, "The Ghost Hunters Return: The Just Say No to Orbs Tour," is planned for 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday...

Stage is set to flush out theatre's resident ghost
He has been appearing at Edinburgh's Playhouse for 50 years, though theatre-goers are unlikely ever to catch a glimpse. In fact Albert – the historic venue's resident ghost – has become almost as famous among staff as the stars who tread the boards. Now a team of paranormal investigators are set to be allowed in to the Greenside Place theatre for the first time in a bid to bring Albert out of the shadows...

Ghost whisperers
A figure stood in a graveyard in Westford. His old army fatigues didn’t flutter although there was a slight breeze outside. He stared ahead as he had always done since his death during World War I in 1918. “Some people don’t even know they are dead,” said Betty Comerford, Westford resident and member of the paranormal group Spirit Light Network...

Is Town Hall really haunted?
Sometimes what’s needed is a second opinion. In January, the Town Hall was declared haunted by the Enfield Paranormal Society after a weekend long investigation into whether there was an otherworldly presence within the historic building. But some in and outside of town remained skeptical of the group’s claims...

Spirit of old jail haunts photo
The old Hampden County Jail and House of Correction on York Street may be giving up its ghosts. Perhaps it's just dust on the lens, but a photograph snapped recently at the jail, which is in the midst of being torn down, is causing a stir. It was taken by local history buff James A. Boone, of Springfield, in the high-ceiling rotunda where the state's last legal hanging took place in 1898...

Is the museum haunted?
He’s not a malevolent spirit. But staff at Welland Historical Museum are pretty sure he resides there. “I don’t know who he is, but he likes to move things around,” said Penny Morningstar, the museum’s assistant curator. “None of us have gotten the sense that he’s harmful, but he’s very mischievous, whoever he is.” A rack of old clothing in storage upstairs at the museum is covered with a plastic sheet to keep dust off it. A few times, Morningstar has left the museum in the evening, certain no one else was in the building, and the plastic sheet was in place, covering the clothing. When she returns the next morning, she has found that plastic sheet pulled from the clothing rack and left on the floor at the far end of the room...
