Paranormal books worth noting recently added to my bookshelf.

Trucker Ghost Stories

A Tor Book

"And Other True Tales of Haunted Highways, Weird Encounters, and Legends of the Road" Edited by Annie Wilder; A TOR Book

We're always interested in ghost stories, of course, and Annie Wilder has assembled a great collection of true accounts told by the people who experienced them. (In the interest of full disclosure, a few stories were contributed by this website.)

There are several categories of true tales: Messages and Assistance from the Spirit World; Haunted Highways and Legends of the Road; Time Slips; and stories that are Just Plain Weird. There's also a version of the book available on CD.

Great read for a road trip! Or any time.

The Real Men in Black

The Real Men in Black
New Page Books

"Evidence, Famous Cases, and True Stories of These Mysterious Men and Their Connection to UFO Phenomena" by Nick Redfern; New Page Books

The highly prolific author and paranormal investigator Nick Redfern gives us the scoop on the real Men in Black (MIB), which are just a freaky and can we say entertaining as the movie versions. Redfern takes us to the modern beginnings of the MIB with UFO researcher Albert Bender -- a strange character himself.

We are given an accounting of many of the eyewitness reports of the MIB, their strange appearance, bizarre behavior, preference for old (but new looking) black cars, and, of course, their black attire. All of which leaves us wonder who or what these guys (and in some cases gals) are: Federal agents? Pranksters? Time travelers? Aliens? All of the above?

We may never know, but this is a fun and fascinating read for those interested in high strangeness.

"Strange Sightings, Incredible Occurrences, and Puzzling Physical Phenomena" - Third Edition by Jerome Clark; Visible Ink Press

This is the Third Edition of Jerome Clark's wonderful compendium of strangeness, and I'm glad to own all three editions. It has proved to be a valuable resource for paranormal information and belongs on the bookshelf of everyone interested in the subject.

I've always appreciated the organization of the book, which makes it quite easy to find the kind of information you might be looking for, including: falls from the sky, flying humanoids, ghost lights, lake monsters, thunderbirds, Nazca lines, entombed animals, mad gassers, mermaids, hollow Earth... and much, much more.

This is one of those books you'll return to again and again for head-shaking accounts of how weird and wonderful this world can sometimes be.

Conspiracies and Secret Societies: The Complete Dossier

Conspiracies and Secret Societies
Visible Ink Press

Second Edition, by Brad Steiger and Sherry Steiger; Visible Ink Press

I continue to marvel at the output and research abilities of author Brad Steiger, who has written hundreds of books with paranormal themes, this one with wife Sherry.

This is truly an astonishing encyclopedia of conspiracies of every kind and secret societies of every dark shade, from antiquity right up to the present day. Those interested in the more paranormal aspects of these subjects (they're arranged alphabetically) will find many entries fascinating, including: alien autopsy, Atlantis, crop circles, Knights Templar, Mothman, the Philadelphia Experiment... and lots more, with each entry carefully detailed.

It's another must-have for the paranormal bookshelf.

Chopin and Beyond

Chopin and Beyond
John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

"My Extraordinary Life in Music and the Paranormal" by Byron Janis with Maria Cooper Janis; John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

To be honest, I haven't read this one yet; it's been sitting on by bookshelf for months, but putting together this article has made me take a closer look at it, and I now see how utterly fascinating it sounds.

Byron James is a concert musician who has enjoyed a well-deserved degree of recognition. Apart from representing the U.S. as part of a U.S./Soviet Cultural Exchange Program, he had also twice discovered original Chopin manuscripts.

So where does the paranormal come in? In this autobiography, Janis reveals paranormal events he experienced relating to the great composer Chopin, how the paranormal helped him continue performing for decades after crippling arthritis should have doomed his career, and several other incidents that he says cannot be explained by science.

It's refreshing to see such forthrightness about the possibilities of the paranormal from someone with such respected credentials: pianist, composer, and friend to Picasso and many other artists and celebrities.
