The Villa Poltergeist

The following story took place in July, 2005. My parents, cousin, my auntie, uncle and I were on holiday in Javea, Spain. We were staying in a very old but beautiful villa for two weeks.

There didn't seem to be anything unusual about the villa, but as we walked into it for the first time, there was a very weird atmosphere that everyone noticed. There was a foul smell and it was freezing cold, even though it was hot outside. The smell also didn't seem to have a source, and we noticed it would stink one minute and the next there would be no smell at all. Everyone dismissed these things and blamed it on the fact that it was a very old house, and no one had lived in it for a long time.

The very first night we stayed, there was a power cut, so the fan turned off, causing me to wake up (I'm a very light sleeper). As I sat in bed, I could hear someone in the kitchen opening and closing the fridge and cupboards, and glasses being put out on the granite counter. I assumed it was someone getting a glass of water, so I went back to sleep.

In the morning I asked who was in the kitchen, but everyone apparently slept through the whole night, and they looked at me as if I was crazy. Every night after that, there would always be a power cut, and I would hear glasses being put out on the counter and cupboards being opened. Needless to say, I was beginning to get quite frightened.

It wasn't until about the sixth night that someone else experienced the creepy noises. I heard a huge banging noise that woke both me and my cousin up. We sat in our beds for a while and listened, and about 10 seconds after the first bang, our door suddenly slammed shut. My parents and my aunt and uncle just thought it was our imaginations, but we both knew it really happened.

The next night there were even more unexplained noises and I was absolutely petrified, so I ran up to my parents' bedroom. Unfortunately, I had to go past the kitchen (which was where the noises were coming from) to get to my parents' bedroom. I didn't dare look into the kitchen and just sprinted past and slept in my parents' room that night.

In the morning at about 5 a.m., my dad woke up to the sound of someone boiling the kettle and putting glasses out on the side. He just assumed it was my uncle making a cup of tea. Later during the day, he asked my uncle why he was up so early, only to learn that he had only just woken up!

Toward the end of the holiday, everyone heard the strange noises, and no one could work out where the smell was coming from or why there were so many power cuts. If I had the chance, I would go back there and investigate because there was definitely something odd about that villa.
