Some close calls, some hits and one interesting surprise

Remote viewing experiment - the box

The box

Photo: Stephen Wagner

LAST MONTH I invited readers to remote view a small box in my office. The experiment was to see if, through remote viewing, they could tell me what the box looks like and to describe the four items I had placed inside. The results, I’m sorry to say, were not great. No one scored very high in the experiment – which may partially be my fault. (More about that later.) Some readers gave a fairly close description of the box, and some readers saw perhaps just one of the items. One reader, however, gave a very surprising report.

THE BOX

First, let’s reveal the box and its contents. You can see three photos above. (Click the link to see them all.) The box is made of thick, high-impact plastic (although for a long time I actually thought it was wood!) and is hand-painted in browns with a yellow-gold and brown diamond shapes on the edges. Embossed or carved on the top is a black bear, and on the sides are pinecones and acorns in brown and orange. Because the box looks like wood, and I even had it in my mind for awhile that it was wood, I gave points to readers who guessed a dark wooden box.

Inside is:

  • A broken digital wrist watch with brown leather strap
  • A box of Paine’s Balsam Fir Incense
  • A bottle of Paine’s Balsam Fir Fragrance Oil
  • A hand-tinted photo of a young woman from the 1930s (who happens to be my mother)

So how did you all do? The most common guesses for the contents, none of which were right, included feathers, marbles, balls, keys, and pencils. Here are some of the close “guesses” and a few that are right on target.

THE RESULTS

Christina R.: “I think your box is dark brown… I can only think of 2 things in the box, 1 is a box of matches and 1 is an old pocket watch.” A watch, not a pocket watch, and the incense is perhaps match related, so Christina gets some points for getting the feeling of it.

Whism10 saw a stop watch.

Leonard R.: “The content of the box is family picture… you and your family.” Well, close – a family picture, but not of me and my family.

Lpirko1 also saw a photo: “Black and white photo of person.” Score!

Ryan A. also guessed “a picture in a frame.” Sorry, Ryan – no frame.

j.a.mccaskill: “1 watch with only half a strap.” A watch, yes; broken, yes; but not the strap.

Karen G.: “I see a carved wooden box with red and yellow painted lines.” Close.

Paul F. guessed, for the inside, a “small teddy bear.” The bear is on the top, not inside.

Amber D. also saw a teddy bear inside.

James H. also saw a bear inside the box, not on the lid.

Philip Z. wrote: “The box is dark, black or brown, made of wood. I see an elephant on the box, but can't make out anything else.” Bear, not elephant. He also saw “a watch, silver and gold.” Got the watch right, but not its color.

Leigh I. also saw an animal on the top: “It's a brown carved wooden box, perhaps Asian or Eastern European in origin. It's carved with a snake or dragon on the top.”
