STORY #2: SAVED BY VOICES FROM NOWHERE

The Wolverton family was on the road on a spring day in 1951. It was Easter vacation time for Sally, a high school senior, and her father decided he would drive her and her mother to Florida from their home in Snyder, New York.

Dad enjoyed those long drives more than Sally and her mom did, but at least the family was together. The first motel they stayed at along the way wasn't exactly luxurious, with its lumpy beds and noisy radiators, but they slept as best they could. Dad had them up early to be back on the road by 6 a.m.

Somewhere along a winding road, everyone in the car heard a man's voice suddenly call out, "Look out!" Sally's mom assumed it was dad and chided him for fooling around and causing undue alarm. Dad, however, insisted it wasn't him. Then a different voice called out, "Look out!"

This time they all knew it wasn't dad. Where were the voices coming from? Dad checked the radio; it wasn't turned on. Mom could have sworn the voices were coming from the area of the glovebox. She checked it and, of course, there was nothing.

Then both voices shouted out in unison, "Look out!" Now completely shaken and baffled, Mr. Wolverton pulled the car over to the side of the road to try to figure out this mystery. Just then, another car appeared from around the bend, speeding at what must have been 90 mph - and in the wrong lane!

Had Mr. Wolverton not pulled off the road when he did, their car surely would have been struck head-on, and it was unlikely that anyone would have survived. To this day, Sally cannot explain whose voices shouted those warnings or where they came from, but she will always be grateful for them.
