Strange Tales 13: Which Story is False?

THE FISHING BIGFOOT

Eyewitnesses who have encountered Bigfoot or Sasquatch have reported such behavior as banging rocks together and washing food in a stream, but rarely has the creature shown aggressive behavior toward people.

Twin brothers George and Scott Iverson tell of a very interesting encounter they had with a large Sasquatch in late September, 2000, when they were salmon fishing in the rivers of the Queen Charlotte Islands of northern British Columbia. At 32, the Iverson brothers were experienced sport fishermen who had fished and camped on these waters for many seasons. They were unprepared, however, for their encounter with a fisher of an entirely different sort.

They awoke early at their campsite, gathered their rods and tackle, and headed toward the river in hopes of a good day's catch. As they neared the river on the tree-lined path, they heard a splashing sound. They thought it might be another camper taking an early morning bath, or possibly a bear fishing for breakfast. As they reached the clearing at the end of the path, they were stopped dead in their tracks at what they saw. There, standing calf-deep in the gently flowing water, was a hairy biped - a Sasquatch.

Luckily, the creature did not see the two men, and so they were able to observe it for a few minutes. The creature, which they estimated to be about 7 feet tall and covered in long, dark brown hair, had a grapefruit-sized rock in its hand and was staring intently into the water. Suddenly, it dashed the rock into the water then reached in and pulled out an apparently stunned fish. The creature threw the fish onto the shore where, the men said, were two or three other dead fish. The Sasquatch then picked up the rock again.

One of the brothers inadvertently muttered, "Oh my god…" at which the Sasquatch quickly turned its head toward them. It made no sound, but slowly and deliberately walked out of the water, picked up its fish and headed toward the woods. The Iversons stepped further out into the clearing to watch the giant creature as it walked away, and they were startled when it threw one of the dead fish at them!

The brothers told their local newspaper that they actually felt "honored" to have seen the unusual creature and regretted only that they did not have a camera with which to record the event. There is no mention as to whether or not they kept the fish the Sasquatch had hurled at them.
