Cat Seer

I would like to share an anecdote about my cats. They are sisters and both are protective although Tink tends to be more cuddly and attention-seeking. Sandy is the one who is fearless, and when she was a young "teen," somewhat special.

Before I adopted them in June 2002, my former husband and I bought a house in Elgin, IL. It was not old or particularly creepy. During the following winter in 2003, we were getting on each other's nerves and decided we should have a "cabin fever" party to break the monotony.

Many of my ex's friends (the Train Gang) showed up, including B___. B___ was more than a little strange, having been badly injured as a former Navy Seal, and into mysticism, etc.

Shortly after he arrived, while in conversation with me, he stated that we had a ghost in our house. Now, I've seen ghosts when I was a kid and experienced some other phenomena I can't explain, but I was fairly skeptical.

B____ was well known to get plenty wasted and weird on a regular basis. I asked him where he thought it was. He pointed to the living room and said, "It's a young girl and she is looking at us from behind that chair."

I looked where he was pointing and got amused. I said, "That's my cat, Sandy." She was lying on the top of the chair. I continued, teasing, "Yes, she is young; yes, she is looking at us, but I doubt she was ever a little girl."

He got kind of annoyed with me and broke off the conversation.

Later that evening, as he was standing in the foyer talking to my youngest son and a woman who was giving him a ride home, I came up from the lower level and Sandy, who had been "helping" the pool players and generally making a social pest of herself down there, followed me.

As I turned toward the foyer, however, I saw something -- motion -- under the table in the foyer. It was like moving water or a shift in the light. Sandy must have seen it too, because she stalked over to the table, almost running by the time she got to it. I swear I saw movement, but I don't know what Sandy saw!

Then she surprised all of us by batting at whatever it was and slapping the wall with her paws, after which she just plopped down and washed herself.

She never did that before or after the party while I lived there. Did B___ bring an guest entity to the party?

But it wasn't the last time Sandy chased things. After I separated from my spouse, the cats and I moved to a rather rundown apartment.

For several months I would have nightmares, which I attributed to emotional distress, and Sandy would often charge through the living/dining area from the patio doors all the way to the back wall, slapping it as she had the wall at the house. Spooky. As I would, her sister Tink would just watch.

One night I got quite drunk and had an epiphany. If there really were things being chased by that cat, it wouldn't hurt to seal the apartment. I must not have been too drunk, because I remember going all around the walls and doors and windows, blessing them in the Name of the Trinity, making crosses.

I think I even blessed the floor. After that, I never saw her display that behavior again, and although I still had some bad dreams, they were less frequent. Coincidence?

Maybe, but in the Bible, as in many other books, thresholds and windows are important. The theory is that by blessing a domicile, you make it yours; once you claim it, no one can come in without permission.

I've moved to a better apartment since, but just in case, I blessed it too. Never had anything but annoying insects enter - and no break-ins either.
